Almost unwatchable because of annoying porn music and extremely slow pace it didn't age well like decades old Falling Down or Fight Club dealing with similar topic.
And even Marathon man or Rocky released in same year aged much better.
I rewatched it for nth time but I always forget how bad is it actually, those good parts don't make out for extremely bad parts of the movie.

Within Scorsese's body of work, it most likely is.

It wasn't overrated for the era it was released in. Great movies are often not great movies forever.

no question about that, I guess by 70s standards it was pretty good, but I'm looking at it by nowadays optics
for instance only few years younger Ordinary people aged great and it's still as good as back then, same with Kramer vs Kramer

Relationship dramas are pretty timeless to be fair. People arguing or angsting over a dead relative is pretty much the same from epoch to epoch.

I've only seen it once and didn't enjoy it at all. Maybe I watched it on an off-day, maybe my opinion would be over-rated too if I watched it again. I just found the theme pretty repulsive and the pacing too slow to be interested in rewatching, frankly.

People need to learn to appreciate art for the time in which it was created, and the limitations of technology available. To connect with how people expressed themselves in the context of their time and sometimes you find yourself incredibly impressed and more understanding how we got where we are today.

as I said there are still decent movies from 70s which aged good, this ain't one of them, maybe it was good back in the days, but certainly doesn't hold to nowadays standards, people should just watch Falling down or Fight club, if they are interested in this topic, still great movies though more than 25-30 years old

And what are those "standards"? I watch films from the 40s that I'd watch ANY day over every CGI superhero flick.
