The scene in the opening when the rebels have their weapons pointed at the entrance to do battle with the storm troopers. There is a close up of one of the guys. He has grey hair. He has no real part at all in the movie. Some people thought he was going to be significant somehow to the plot given he had such a closeup. But no. What a waste of a shot! No plot significance again and he is no Debbie Reynolds or Vanna White when it comes to being a good looker on screen. He draws in nobody.
MASH (see my postings) did similar bad writing. They introduced patients suffering or insanely attacking people but the patients had no plot significance at all either. Bad writing! (Star Wars and Mash were both 20th Century Fox works --so was this a studio trend?)
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind had a close up shot of a lady looking at the approaching U.F.O. and she too has 100% zero relevance to the plot. But she makes far better screen viewing than the SW guy. She could draw in folks.
