I have played all the major releases for Assassins Creed. I enjoy them but it's not something I need as soon as they come out. I normally buy them when they go on sale 6 to 12 months later. It's been a while since I've played one but I feel like I know the story. With the casting of Michael Fassbender and Jeremy Irons, I had high hopes for this. I watched it last night and I gotta say, it wasn't very good. Like, at all. If someone watches this movie who has never played the games, I feel they would have a hard time understanding what the hells going on. I've played the games and I was still lost. No backstory, no character development, nothing. I feel like this movie started out all wrong and if they took 45 minutes to develop the world and the characters better, it would have been at least coherent.
I was going to start breaking this down to the good and the bad but I just can't think of much that I thought was "good". The acting was solid and I did enjoyed the first fight scene and the escape from the execution scene. Overall, good stunt work. Unfortunately, they decided to mix in the fight scenes with him attached the Animus and flashing lights and shadow boxing. Each time it switched to him in the present day, it took me out of the fight completely. Personally, I didn't see the need for the Animus to be attached to him and have him running and jumping in the present day. This was only done for a spectacle. It would have been just as effective if they had him on a table Similar to the Matrix and all the fight scenes happening in the past and not adding all the silly cut scenes. They also spend WAY to much time in the present. Yes, it was necessary to start the movie in the present but the other half of the movie should have been him in 1492 trying to find the "apple" with cut scenes back to Jeremy Irons and the daughter discussing their next moves and occasionally him coming out of the Animus. I probably missed something but I'm not even sure how they found the "apple" in the present day. By the end of the movie, my mind wasn't in it anymore. I had issues with the other Assassins as well. So if I got this right, they didn't like him being the only one to use the Animus and they wanted to kill him. But at the end, they all became buddy buddy? I feel like all the other Assassins should have been left out, center the story on Fassbender and then maybe if you do a sequel, bring in more Assassins.
Assassins Creed would be better on the small screen similar to what Marvel is doing with Daredevil, Luke Cage etc. Give me 10 1 hour long episodes with backstory, character development and more time in the past and I have a feeling this would turn out good. unfortunately, you can't take a 15+ hour game and cram it into a 2-hour movie. I really want to give this movie a good rating but it was so bad, I just can't. I'm pushing it with giving it a 4/10

Overall it was poor. I liked the cast, but that was about it. 4/10 is fair.
