Story of a New England boys' school and of one of the students who is infatuated with an instructor's wife who has Multiple Sclerosis. The woman struggles to show her strict husband how love rather than demands helps the student to blossom, but finally she falls into a coma. While she is able to have some 'looking down' awareness of what is happening, her coma is what brings her husband to an understanding of the needs of others.

Helen es la devota esposa de un profesor que, a pesar de juventud, ya es madre de dos niños a los que debe criar y sacar adelante. Pero, Helen empieza a sentirse profundamente cansada, sin fuerzas y con grandes dificultades para moverse: son los síntomas de la esclerosis múltiple. Sin embargo, en lugar de derrumbarse bajo el peso de esta enfermedad, experimenta algo sorprendente para una mujer de su tiempo y creencias: descubre que puede dejar su cuerpo y elevarse sobre la misma realidad en la que vive presa de su cuerpo. Así, realiza viajes astrales que, aunque no sean reales, la ayudan a cambiar su carácter y manera de ver la vida.
