The story is set in a frontier village during the First World War. The castle has been converted into a special military hospital. Wounded officers are expected, but no one is brought. The forest surrounding the castle is peaceful and serene. The life of the inmates goes on in the monotony of everyday life. Zoltan, the doctor in charge of the hospital, feels at home on his island of peace. His life is free of danger, his beautiful lover and the good friend he has made here help to banish his boredom. Everyone already knows that the Monarchy has lost the war, it's just a question of how to end it. However, the struggle for independence of the southern Slavic peoples and the rebel soldiers are turning this peaceful world upside down.
