Judge Isaac Parker was a real-life person. He was called 'The hanging judge'. Played in this movie by James Westerfield. (So the movie was a little bit of a true story.)

Pretty cool info, thanks! :D For a moment I thought it had a connection to "Hang 'Em High" with Clint Eastwood. Sadly, it's not quite enough to save this movie for me. It was a chore to sit through. Mattie Ross was beyond annoying throughout.

I thought the 2010 version was definitely better. While I am a John Wayne fan, Jeff Bridges is marvelous as Rooster Cogburn. I agree, Kim Darby was a bit annoying. Hailee Steinfeld plays the overly confident Mattie Ross without being annoying.

Bridges is nearly impossible to identify with. Wayne's Rooster was easier to relate to.
Annoying!?! Darby is so much a feel-good actress --the kind we never, ever have on film or TV anymore! And a very sexy lady to boot.
