No rational person thought it would be nominated for anything. We all know the academy always falls for the obvious Oscar bait, all the big awards go to movies no one has heard of that are released in 2 or 3 theaters in the last week of the year to quality for awards and then only get a full release after the Oscar broadcast. Mainstream movies don't win creative awards only obscure Oscar bait movies do.

Does the OP not understand that the global takings have set both the actors like RDJ, the cast and crew of Endgame for life they never have to work again?

One nomination is pretty good for a movie that wasn't in the last 3 months of the year, which 2/3rds of the nominations were this year.

Yeah, as someone who loved Endgame, there was not a second that transpired when the thought of it being nominated for any of the big Oscars ever found it's way into my mind. Though I'm not sure I agree with you're definition of obvious Oscar bait (they do award a few obscure films but not many would describe the likes of Titanic, Forrest Gump and The King's Speech as films no one has heard of.) but yeah, they do always go for films that tick very stereotypical boxes. None of which Endgame ticked.
And that's awesome! But the main reason it's so awesome is because Joker is also a film that the Oscars would tend to ignore. And so it's (hopefully) a sign of changing times. Though it is a lot closer to an award contender than Endgame due to it's creative aesthetics, themes and standout acting so the possibility of it being nominated was never as ridiculously implausible as Endgame.
I hope it wins.

What do I give a s*** how "set" the actors have it in life...my ONLY discussion was with the FILM awards...not the money or box office or how much richer Mickey and pals are now!
Maybe Scorcese is right...not many nominations for theme park "films"
