德川幕府时期，刽子手拜一刀（田村正和 饰）深得主公信任，然以柳生备前（橋爪功 饰）为首的柳生一族觊觎大权，因此视武功高强的水欧派剑客拜一刀如大敌。在正式比武前夕，备前设计陷害拜一刀，并杀害了他的妻子蓟（古手川祐子 饰），致令拜一刀挥刀而起，斩杀前来拘捕他的官差。在此之后，他与有着“暗里柳生”之称的柳生烈堂（仲代达矢 饰）相约决斗，最终取胜，于是获准带着儿子大五郎离开江户。从此，拜一刀化身为独行江湖的赏金杀手，与宿敌柳生一族结下难以化解的仇恨……

A noble samurai serving the Shogun as 'Kogi Kaishaku-nin' (Official Executioner) is the target of a plot by the evil Yagyu Clan to take away his position and replace him with a member of their own family. When his wife is murdered and evidence is produced that he was plotting against the Shogun the Code of Bushido calls for him and his son to commit sepuku. Instead he defies the Shogun's orders and takes up arms against his enemies, becoming an assassin for hire.

Ogami Itto, bourreau officiel du shogun est victime d’un coup monté par Bizen Yagyu, visant à le destituer et le forcer à commettre le seppuku. Celui-ci refuse et choisi la voie du sang, jurant de faire payer au clan Yagyu cette trahison.

Ogami Ittō, un samurái que sirve al shogun como "Kogi Kaishaku-nin" (verdugo oficial) es el objetivo de una conspiración clan Yagyu para tomar su trabajo y reemplazarlo con un miembro de su propia familia. Cuando su esposa es asesinada y la evidencia parece demostrar que está conspirando contra el Shogun, el código Bushido requiere que cometa seppuku. En cambio, desafía las órdenes del Shogun y toma las armas con su hijo pequeño contra sus enemigos, convirtiéndose en un asesino para contratar.
