In its day, one can see how Peyton Place must have seemed scandalous. In a two and a half hour runtime it crams in such topics as incestuous rape, unmarried motherhood, teenage sex and pregnancy, suicide and abortion - and all this in 1957! Nowadays such things can be found in every daytime soap opera, but back then it must have caused jaws to drop. Has anybody read the original novel? I presume its content was racier still than that of the film?

Somehow - and I don't know why - I've never seen this movie, though I've heard of it all my life, and have always thought it sounds intriguing.

It’s an enjoyable watch if you don’t take it too seriously. Handsomely produced with variable acting. I know some think very highly of it and it’s certainly of historical importance as a time capsule. As small-town melodramas go I’d take Some Came Running over it any day, though.
