De hele dag door is er op tv een ijsgat te zien. IJsgaten zijn het thema van de dag, een wintertraditie die gelovigen en sporters, sterren en walrussen, de president en werklozen verenigt. In het midden van de nieuwsberichten staan de onderwerpen doop, vissen en de criminele kroniek. De president en een snoek, de kunstenaar en de critici, de oligarch en het wetshandhavingsteam – ze ontmoeten elkaar allemaal bij een ijsgat op zoek naar oplossingen voor hun problemen. De werkloze Moskoviet, met slechte gewoonten, duikt in een ijsgat voor een vrouw, net als Sadko. De sprookjesachtige plots verstrengelen zich met de documentaire context en het is niet meer duidelijk waar de werkelijkheid eindigt. Denk aan Nietzsche: als je lang in de afgrond staart, zal de afgrond ook in jou staren.

Весь день по телевизору показывают прорубь. Прорубь – тема дня, зимняя традиция, объединяющая верующих и спортсменов, звёзд и моржей, президента и безработного. В центре новостных сюжетов – Крещение, рыбалка и криминальная хроника. Президент и щука, художник и критики, олигарх и правоохранительные органы – все встречаются у проруби в поисках решений своих проблем. А безработный москвич, страдающий от вредных привычек, спускается в прорубь за женой, точно какой-то Садко. Сказочные сюжеты переплетаются с документальным контекстом, и уже непонятно, где заканчивается реальность. Вспоминая Ницше: если ты долго всматриваешься в прорубь, то прорубь тоже начнет всматриваться в тебя.
