I don't really see the comparison with those two films, other than the fact that Van Sant also directed one of them.
My Own Private Idaho - going off memory here, it's been twenty something years since I saw it - is a beautifully shot and moving film with a great, devastating performance by River Phoenix. Not a perfect film by any means (Keanu Reeves is particularly wooden in it) but well worth checking out, I think.
