De jonge dochter van Keizo Tsujiguchi, een gerespecteerd arts die zijn eigen ziekenhuis runt, wordt vermoord aangetroffen. Keizo geeft zijn vrouw Natsue in het geheim de schuld omdat hij haar ervan verdenkt een affaire te hebben met zijn collega Murai en te afgeleid te zijn geweest om goed over het kind te waken. Omdat hij een trotse man is, beschuldigt hij haar niet rechtstreeks, maar bedenkt hij in plaats daarvan een verwrongen wraak tegen haar. Keizo doet alsof hij zijn verwoeste vrouw wil troosten en regelt dat ze een dochtertje adopteren. Wat hij Natsue niet heeft verteld, is dat de baby de weesdochter is van de moordenaar, een tragische dagloner die zichzelf heeft opgehangen terwijl hij in politiehechtenis zat. Hij is van plan de afkomst van het kind te onthullen nadat Natsue haar hart aan het kind heeft gegeven, wanneer dit de grootst mogelijke pijn zal veroorzaken.

The young daughter of Keizo Tsujiguchi, a respected physician who runs his own hospital, is found murdered. Keizo secretly blames his wife Natsue because he suspects her of having an affair with his colleague Murai, and having been too distracted to keep proper watch over the child. Being a proud man, he does not accuse her directly, but concocts, instead, a twisted revenge against her. Pretending it is to comfort his devastated wife, Keizo arranges for them to adopt a baby girl. What he hasn't told Natsue, is that the baby is the orphaned daughter of the murderer, a tragic day-laborer who has hanged himself while in police custody. He plans to reveal the child's origins after Natsue has given her heart to the child-- when it will cause the greatest possible hurt.
