تدور أحداث الفيلم حول فتاة تلقى مصيرها عندما تقف وحدها ضد أسرتها وتقلب تقليد القرية المتمثل في التضحية بالأطفال الإناث إلى المخلوقات الغامضة التي تعيش في المياه المجاورة.

Hayat, a 12-year-old strong-willed girl, lives in a poor fishing village governed by dark tradition, in which every family must give away a daughter to the sea creatures who inhabit the waters near by. In turn, the sea creatures are hunted by the men of the village. Saved from this ordeal by her father, Hayat is outcasted by her village and considered a curse. But Hayat never surrenders. When Hayat’s mother gives birth to her new-born brother, Hayat must accept the brutal custom by sacrificing herself to these creatures or find a way to escape.

La jeune Hayat vit dans un village de pêcheurs régi par une sombre tradition : chaque famille doit donner une fille aux créatures marines qui habitent les eaux voisines. En retour, les créatures marines sont ensuite chassées par les hommes du village. Hayat échappe de peu au sacrifice grâce à la bienveillance de son père. Mais sa survie fait d’elle une paria. Lorsque vient son frère nouveau-né, Hayat doit choisir entre accepter son destin de devenir sirène ou se battre pour le corps qu’elle habite.

황량하고 메마른 섬에 자리한 하야트의 마을에는 집집마다 딸을 한 명씩 바다에 바쳐야 하는 오랜 관습이 있다. 바다에 딸을 바치는 대신, 마을 남자들이 바다 생명체들을 사냥해 생계를 이어가는 것이다. 아버지 덕분에 아기일 때 제물이 될 운명을 피한 하야트는 마을 안에서 저주처럼 여겨지며 따돌림을 받는다. 굳센 의지를 가진 하야트는 그에 굴하지 않고 자신의 자리를 찾고자 하지만, 남동생이 태어나면서 다시 잔혹한 관습에 희생될 위기에 처한다.
