شحاتة أفندي يعمل محاسبًا فى دكان لبيع الطيور، يصله خطاب يحمل خبر قبوله فى وظيفة جديدة كمحاسب في أملاك موقوفة، يحدث أن تدعى راقصة أن لها طفلاً من ابن ناظر الوقف وتتركه له ويعرف الجميع أن هناك طفلًا يدعى حلموس ولا يعرفون له أمًا ولا أبًا. تستغل ابنة ناظر الوقف هذا الحدث وتدعي أنها أم الطفل من شحاتة.
