What's interesting is that Seven Samurai is a straight-forward story where the villagers gather the samurai, they train for a bit, the bandits attack and then the movie ends...over 3 hours later.
A Bug's Life, on the other hand, takes 90-some odd minutes to tell the same story, but with added twists and complications. And it still works. Nothing feels crammed in or added for the sake of adding another twist or complication...which is odd because Seven Samurai never feels too long or one-note.
Both films are excellent.
