東京駅発、特急こだま。食堂車ウエイトレスのサヨ子は、コック助手の喜一にプロポーズをする。サヨ子の夢は、喜一と父が昔やっていた弁当屋を大阪で開くことだった。とはいえ喜一は一流ホテルのコックなる夢を捨てられない。さらに華族出身のスチュアデス・有女子が喜一に時々ささやきかけるのが気になる。こだまが終点・大阪に着くまで6時間半。サヨ子は喜一からプロポーズの返事を受け取ることができるのか…。
