June 1941. Two young village boys are taken by surprise by the outbreak of war. One of them receives a summons to the draft board, although he is not at all eager to go to the front. 제2차세계대전 발발. 평범한 삶을 살던 소련의 청년들은 국가에 의해 강제로 전쟁터에 끌려 나간다. 오랜 친구인 니콜라이와 표트르는 끔찍한 전쟁의 실상에 큰 충격을 받는다. 게다가 거대한 독일 탱크까지 등장해 무자비하게 소련군대를 짓밟기 시작한다. 이제 살아남기 위해선 먼저 쳐야만 한다는 사실을 깨달은 두 친구는 전우들과 함께 목숨을 걸고 적과 맞서기로 결심한다.
