As the ravages of war intensify, the two, who each carried a heavy cross during the Battle of Okinawa, desperately devote themselves to saving the lives of the Okinawan people, with the belief that "life is precious." 第二次世界大戦末期の1945年（昭和20年）沖縄本島及びその周辺離島に上陸したアメリカ軍とイギリス軍を主体とする連合国軍と日本軍の間で行われた激戦。4月1日、沖縄本島中部に上陸したアメリカ軍は、島を南北に分断。迎撃のため、日本軍は南部撤退による持久戦を展開。その結果、沖縄県民を巻き込む激しい地上戦となる。6月23日、日本軍司令官・参謀長らの自決により組織的戦闘は終結。この戦争での沖縄県民の死者は12万2278人、そのうちの9万4000人は、一般の住民であった。
