Frédéric Chaslin (born 1963, in Paris) is a French conductor, composer and pianist. He recently joined the prestigious Music publishing house Universal Edition in Vienna.

The son of an architect, Chaslin studied at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won first prizes in harmony, counterpoint, fugue, piano accompaniment, vocal direction, and orchestration. He later studied at the Mozarteum University of Salzburg, where his mentors included Paul von Schilawsky.

In 1989, Chaslin became an assistant conductor to Daniel Barenboim at the Orchestre de Paris and at the Bayreuth Festival. In 1991, he held a similar post with Pierre Boulez at the Ensemble Intercontemporain from 1989 to 1991. Boulez gave him his first concerts at an international level in Roma (July 1991) and at the Festival Wien Modern (19 October 1991). Chaslin was music director of the Opera de Rouen from 1991 to 1994. He was chief conductor of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (JSO) from 1999 to 2002, between the music directorships of David Shallon and Leon Botstein and again between 2011-2019. From 1999 to 2005, he was a resident conductor of the Vienna State Opera. He served as Generalmusikdirektor of the Nationaltheater Mannheim from 2005 to 2006.

Chaslin first conducted in the United States at the Metropolitan Opera in November 2002. In July 2009, he made his conducting debut at Santa Fe Opera (SFeO), in the first production of La traviata to feature Natalie Dessay as Violetta. In May 2010, SFeO announced the appointment of Chaslin as the company's second chief conductor in its history, effective October 1, 2010, with an initial contract of three years. He resigned his position with SFeO at the end of August 2012.

After making his house debut in the 1996/1997 season, Frédéric Chaslin became a fixture at the Wiener Staatsoper, where within 20 years he conducted more than 200 performances.

Frédéric Chaslin made his debut at the Semperoper Dresden in the 2016/2017 season with a new production of Les contes d'Hoffmann.

Recent engagements as a conductor also include, among many symphony concerts all over the world, several opera productions at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna (Carmen, Aida) and Cavalleria rusticana/Pagliacci) and at Opéra Royal de Wallonie (La Bohème, Mignon and Lakmé). He also led productions such as Werther at the Royal Opera House Muscat and in Bergen, Les contes d'Hoffmann in Copenhagen, Don Giovanni at the Chorégies d'Orange, Il barbiere di Siviglia in Savonlinna, Faust at the Teatro La Fenice, Carmen in Monte Carlo, Tosca at La Monnaie in Brussels, Die tote Stadt at the Enescu Festival in Bucharest, La fille du régiment at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari and a new production of La Gioconda at the Teatro alla Scala, where he leads a new staging of Les contes d'Hoffmann in 2023. In 2023, Frédéric Chaslin also returned to Tokyo to conduct concert performances of Puccini's Tosca at the Tokyo Spring Festival with Krassimira Stoyanova and Sir Bryn Terfel. ...

Frédéric Chaslin est un chef d'orchestre, compositeur et pianiste français, né à Paris en 1963. Successivement directeur musical de l'Opéra de Rouen, du Nationaltheater de Mannheim, de l'Opéra de Santa Fe, il est entre 1999-2001 et 2011-2019, directeur musical de l'Orchestre symphonique de Jérusalem. Il est entré en juin 2020 chez Universal Edition pour l’ensemble de son catalogue.

Frédéric Chaslin étudie au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris où il obtient les premiers prix d'harmonie, de contrepoint, d'accompagnement au piano, de direction de chant, et d'orchestration, puis au Mozarteum de Salzbourg où il est diplômé dans la classe d'accompagnement du lied de Paul von Schilawsky en 1981.

Il devient l'assistant de Daniel Barenboïm à l'Orchestre de Paris et au Festival de Bayreuth, puis celui de Pierre Boulez à l'Ensemble intercontemporain de 1989 à 1991. Il est nommé successivement directeur musical de l'Opéra de Rouen (1991), puis de l'Orchestre symphonique de Jérusalem (1999) et enfin du Nationaltheater de Mannheim (2005). Il est, de 1999 à 2005, chef en résidence du Staatsoper de Vienne et dirige chaque année depuis 1997 le Deutsche Oper de Berlin, le Metropolitan Opera de New York. Côté symphonique, il dirige également les ensembles suivant: Philharmonia de Londres, Orchestre de Paris, orchestres symphonique et philharmonique de Vienne, La Scala, orchestre philharmonique de Nagoya, orchestres de Turin et Opéras de Rome, Venise, Barcelone, Munich et Tokyo.

En tant que pianiste, Chaslin donne en concert en soliste le Concerto pour piano n° 5 de Beethoven avec l'Orchestre philharmonique de Vienne et le Concerto en sol de Ravel au Japon, en Italie et à Israël. En tant que compositeur, il écrit sept opéras dont Wuthering Heights sur un livret de P.H Fisher et plusieurs mélodies et Lieder. Son dernier opéra, La Morte amoureuse d'après Théophile Gauthier, sur un livret de P.H Fisher, est donné en 2014 par le Festival Of the Voices, Phoenicia et le Public Theater de Cleveland.

Il complète plusieurs pièces pour orchestre, dont la Gipsy Dance jouée en première mondiale au Teatro Colon de Buenos Aires, et plusieurs cycles de mélodies pour soprano, mezzo et baryton d'après le poète américain Robert Frost. Il compose un cycle de sept mélodies de Jean Cocteau créé au Festival d'Hattonchatel 2017, ainsi qu'une comédie musicale sur Monte Cristo à la demande de Placido Domingo.

Chaslin publie un livre, La Musique dans tous les sens aux éditions France-Empire. Il publie un premier roman, On achève bien Mahler chez Fayard (2017).
