Stéphane Audran (born Colette Suzanne Jeannine Dacheville; November 8, 1932 – March 27, 2018) was a French film and television actress. Best known for her performances in Oscar-winning movies such as The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) and Babette's Feast (1987), and in critically acclaimed films like The Big Red One (1980) and Violette Nozière (1978), she became mostly associated with haughty bourgeois women roles.

She married French director and screenwriter Claude Chabrol in 1964, after a short marriage to the French actor Jean-Louis Trintignant. Her son by her marriage to Chabrol (which ended in 1980) is the French actor Thomas Chabrol (born in 1963).

Her first major role was in Chabrol's film Les Cousins (1959). She has since appeared in most of Chabrol's films. Some of the more noteworthy of his films Audran has appeared in are Les Bonnes Femmes (1960), La Femme Infidèle (1968), Les Biches (1968) as a rich lesbian who becomes involved in a ménage à trois (she first gained notice in this), Le Boucher (1970) as a school teacher who falls in love with a murderous butcher, Juste Avant La Nuit (1971), and Violette Nozière (1978). She won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her role in Les Biches at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival.

She also appeared in the first film of Éric Rohmer (Signe du Lion), and in films by Jean Delannoy (La Peau de Torpedo), Gabriel Axel (Babette's Feast, as the mysterious cook, Babette), Bertrand Tavernier (Coup de Torchon, as the wife of the cop turned serial killer) and Samuel Fuller (The Big Red One). The most celebrated of her non-Chabrol films was Luis Buñuel's Oscar-winning Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie (1972) as Alice Senechal. Also appearing in English-language productions, Audran has appeared in American features like The Black Bird (1975), and in TV serials like Brideshead Revisited (1981), Mistral's Daughter (1984) and The Sun Also Rises (1984).

Audran won a French César Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in Violette Nozière (1978) and British Film Academy award for Just Before Nightfall (1975).

Après avoir commencé sa carrière au théâtre dans les années 1950, Stéphane Audran obtient quelques rôles secondaires dans des films de la Nouvelle Vague. Sa rencontre avec Claude Chabrol en 1958 est décisive: elle devient à la fois son épouse et son actrice fétiche. Elle joue dans certains des films les plus reconnus du réalisateur, comme Le Boucher, Poulet au vinaigre et Les Noces rouges. Elle participe aussi au film de Luis Buñuel, Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie, qui reçoit l'Oscar du meilleur film en langue étrangère en 1973. Stéphane Audran a été une figure emblématique du cinéma français des années 1970.

Après 1980, sa carrière s'essouffle, mais elle retrouve le succès avec le film danois Le Festin de Babette en 1987, qui reçoit lui aussi l'Oscar du meilleur film étranger. Par la suite, elle se fait plus rare à l'écran.

Reconnaissable à sa voix traînante, elle est connue pour ses rôles de femmes élégantes, calmes et complexes. Stéphane est la fille de Corneille Dacheville, médecin, mort alors qu'elle a six ans. Son enfance est difficile, car elle est de santé fragile entre six et quinze ans. Sa mère, Jeanne Rossi, qui a perdu sa première fille en bas âge, est obsédée par la santé de sa fille cadette. Stéphane Audran montre très tôt un goût pour le déguisement et la comédie, mais sa mère n'approuve pas son rêve de devenir actrice. Après ses études secondaires au lycée Lamartine de Paris, Stéphane Audran suit les cours d'art dramatique de Charles Dullin, Tania Balachova, Michel Vitold et René Simon.

Stéphane Audran rencontre Jean-Louis Trintignant au cours Dullin et ils se marient le 18 novembre 1954. Elle commence sa carrière au théâtre dans La Tragédie des Albigeois de Maurice Clavel et Jacques Panijel en 1955, pièce dans laquelle joue aussi son mari. Elle poursuit la même année sa carrière dans La Maison carrée, puis obtient un rôle dans La Nuit romaine en 1957. Contrairement à plusieurs de ses anciens camarades de cours de théâtre, comme Delphine Seyrig, Michael Lonsdale, Laurent Terzieff ou Jean-Louis Trintignant, Stéphane Audran n'obtient pas un grand succès sur scène. Daniel Costelle lui offre son premier rôle au cinéma en 1957, dans son court-métrage Le Jeu de la nuit, puis elle enchaîne avec des petits rôles dans des longs métrages, sous la direction d'Éric Rohmer, Jacques Becker et Hervé Bromberger. ...
