Julian Rachlin (born 8 December 1974) is a Lithuanian-born violinist, violist and conductor.

Born in Vilnius to a Jewish family, he emigrated in 1978 with his musician parents to Austria. In 1983, he entered the Konservatorium Wien and studied violin in the Soviet tradition with Boris Kuschnir, while also receiving private lessons from Pinchas Zukerman. His career as a child prodigy began with his first public concert in 1984.

In 1988, he took the title of Eurovision Young Musician of the Year, which led to his being invited to appear at the Berlin Festival with Lorin Maazel and to his becoming the youngest soloist to ever play with the Vienna Philharmonic, under the direction of Riccardo Muti.

In 2000, he joined Rostropovich and Yuri Bashmet, among others, in the premiere of Krzysztof Penderecki's Sextet. The same year, Rachlin also founded his own music festival in Dubrovnik, "Julian Rachlin and Friends". Since 2000, he has also played the concerto and chamber repertoire for the viola.

In 2005, Rachlin made his Carnegie Hall debut when he performed with the New York Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel.

In 2014, Rachlin was appointed principal guest conductor of the Royal Northern Sinfonia. In 2018, he became principal guest conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. In November 2022, the KSO announced the appointment of Rachlin as its next chief conductor, effective with the 2023-2024 season. In January 2023, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra announced the appointment of Rachlin as its next music director, effective with the 2023–2024 season.

Rachlin plays the "ex Liebig" Stradivarius violin (which is loaned to him by its owner, the Dkfm. Angelika Prokopp Privatstiftung).

In 2000, he was awarded the International Prize of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena.

En 1978, Julian Rachlin émigre avec ses parents musiciens en Autriche. En 1983, il entre à l'Académie de musique et des arts du spectacle de Vienne et étudie le violon avec Boris Kuschnir qui l'élève dans la tradition de l'école de violon soviétique. Il prend également des cours privés avec Pinchas Zukerman. Il donne son premier concert public en 1984 et commence une carrière d'enfant prodige. Sa carrière se développe en Europe et aux États-Unis avec les chefs les plus prestigieux, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Bernard Haitink, James Levine, Zubin Mehta et André Previn. En 2005, il fait ses débuts au Carnegie Hall avec l'Orchestre philharmonique de New York, sous la baguette de Lorin Maazel.

Il se produit en musique de chambre avec des artistes comme Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Natalia Gutman, Mstislav Rostropovitch, Itamar Golan, etc. Il a créé le Sextuor de Penderecki avec Mstislav Rostropovitch et Yuri Bashmet. En 2000, il fonde son propre festival à Dubrovnik, "Julian Rachlin and Friends". Depuis 2000, il se produit également à l'alto dans un répertoire de concerto et de musique de chambre.

Ses enregistrements de concertos pour violon de Sibelius, Tchaïkovski, Brahms ainsi que son enregistrement de la Sonate pour alto et piano, op. 147 de Chostakovitch ont été salués par la critique. En 2000, il est récompensé par le prestigieux Prix international de l'Académie Chigiana de Sienne.

Julian Rachlin joue sur un Guarnerius del Gesù de 1741, l'ex-Carrodus, mis à sa disposition par la Banque nationale autrichienne.

Il a également joué son propre rôle dans plusieurs séries et documentaires, ainsi que le rôle de Paganini dans Napoléon (mini-série) en 2002.
