American-born British conductor and composer Carl Davis CBE, age 86, passed yesterday. I've for decades been a fan of Mr. Davis' wonderful scores newly composed for great restored Silent screen classics. To name just a few of the movies: D. W. Griffith's Intolerance: Love's Struggle Through The Ages (1916); Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924); Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ (1925); The Phantom of the Opera (1925); Abel Gance's Napoléon (1926); and Clarence Brown's Flesh and the Devil (1927).
RIP.
