Shirley MacLaine has never been one of my favourite actresses - there is an overt brashness to her onscreen persona that I sometimes find somewhat off-putting. But she can, of course, be VERY good indeed. While she is wonderfully charming and very funny in The Apartment, my pick for her best performance is The Children's Hour. A truly great dramatic performance, ultimately heartbreaking.
