Discuss Matt Bomer

I think it was Andrew who discussed this with me on the IMDB board before it's demise. Since it's no longer accessible, I'd like to readdress here. (Andrew, if it wasn't you, I apologize for putting words in your "mouth").

We discussed our view that Matt's sheer beauty costs him leading roles. The leaders at the box office aren't beautiful. They're usually handsome but that isn't necessarily crucial, and they're certainly no more talented than Matt, in fact often much less so. But they're more rugged, rough, "masculine" whatever that actually means.

Regardless of how fair it is, i think the biggest adult consumers of movie tickets are straight women who want a hot manly guy to imagine in their bed and straight men who connect to the average Joe, a man's man. That average Joe is not a gorgeous runway model, and Matt doesn't exude the testosterone many of those women love to drool over for 2 hours.

(Just sayin... I'm straight and I can imagine Matt in my bed regardless of his look (yum), but I'm not average which is the audience he needs to pick up)

That's not to say those same people don't appreciate an intellectually stimulating story, but on a regular basis, even with a high caliber project, that overt testosterone sells, even if it's represented between the lines.

I feel Matt's hair and attire play a large role in this. I adore the messy look in the Tom Ford ads (I adore all of his looks) but even that is perfectly coifed. Imo, his long messy hair in the earlier episodes of Chuck would do wonders in getting him considered for leading roles, along with dressing down more often. Or his look in TCM. Even the bland look he protrayed in Tru Calling.

Even when he's not wearing a suit, even though his wardrobe runs a wide gamut, he's always polished at events, hair & clothes. Unless one is a specific fan, one doesn't see the jeans & t-shirt out and about shots. Even those looks are pretty perfect, though.

Imo he needs to rough up to show directors, producers, casting agents that he's not only a gorgeous club boy, but can lead action, drama, romance, whatever. Action may not be the type of script he wants, but if he's willing to do Magic Mike to get his face out there, action is no less a compromise.

I keep scratching my head why Matt isn't a big name yet. Clearly those who know him are crazy about him but not too many know him. His pretty boy looks may be getting in the way but then there are so many pretty boys out there who consistently get cast, Dave Franco (James' younger brother), Zac Efron, Jared Leto (feminine & delicate), Leo Caprio (younger). I mean, there are lots of role that require beautiful men, so I'm not sure how true that reason is. Finally, I saw the first few mins of Mag7 today. I was seriously livid seeing him killed off & seeing how utterly amazing he was yet the casting director didn't want to give him a larger role. Yes he looked beautiful, but he also looked rugged & conveyed the desperation, fear, resolve, bravely of the character so effectively. I really think Matt's being open of his relationship with Simon might have done some damage to his career. I wonder how many people in the industry raised eyebrows when he openly kissed Simon after winning Critics Choice. I'm so glad he did Walking Out. Hope many people see it. To Matt's credit he has tried to vary his resume. The Nice Guys, Mag7, Neal Caffrey. I do agree that he has the same super groomed look in all his social appearances. He needs to change it up a bit. Longer messy hair. Casual clothes. Looking a bit older will definitely take him away from his "metrosexual" stereotype people associate him with. Maybe his look in the Todd Snyder ads plus Walking Out was intended to showcase his rugged side.

Matt's over/hyper groomed look is very wealthy, white, urban and gay, I'm a gay man so I'm allowed to mention that! Also possibly a childhood hangover too. It's one thing for a more average looking actor to spiffy up for a red carpet, it's just too much on a model perfect man like Matt. Stubble or the post Normal Heart buzzcut could be resumed. And navy blue over black tuxedos just too much. Simon's looks on this events are so much more low key and appropriate. I'm delighted to see Matt kiss Simon at public events and walk the red carpet as a couple but it may not help his career. I was disappointed to see Simon seemingly absent from TLT press events and even the HFPA grant evening. I also suspect Matt's career choices are now significantly affected by family, post White Collar no long periods on location, long breaks between jobs, and possibly a caution about becoming any more famous.

I noticed that the UK Facebook website posted a pic of him from last night at the Emmys with a beard saying it makes him look rugged. I disagree. Stubble or the occasional beard does wonders, but not when his hair is gelled perfectly in place. And leaving the gray in it does not help him look any less metrosexual so that gray needs to go at his young age imo. Looking rugged and looking older are not the same.

Yes, the kiss is a dichotomy, isn't it? I was also thrilled to see them openly kiss and acknowledge that their relationship/family is more important than his career. Matt's integrity is what so many of us love about him most. I wouldn't change that kiss. But it probably did cause an issue. That may not be as big a problem if he played the game in other ways - such as the wardrobe/hair. As is, he's a prime target for stereotyping. :( His agent should be advising him on this.

The current beard is not especially rugged to my way of thinking, Matt does appear rugged in Walking Out but it appears to me from the trailer he also lost weight for that. And so often attractive actors do get opportunities when directors and casting directors perceived they can play plainer/ rougher/nerdier eg. Ryan Gosling in some roles. I haven't seen the Emmys but the co presenting with BD Wong (who looked camp with that hair cut), stick the 2 gay actors together? And though homophobia may be at play here in casting choices other out actors like Luke Evans and Zachary Quinto are storming ahead. Though the metrosexual persona is limiting it could potentially be used in an interesting manner dramatically but that's no reason to slavishly follow it. I suspect Matt's good looks will continue to define and unfortunately limit his career and surprise and pleasure will be expressed when he's all to infrequently given material to show his ability. Matt's agent are CAA, some have suggested he's to small a fish for that big pond. And what role personal relationships play there, old family friend Bryan Lourd being boss there. And was there too much emphasis on troubled gay teen in recent interviews over the summer? Some success on Broadway, if that comes off, and regular stage work there after could do wonders to showcase his talents and the way he is perceived. I wonder how to read Simon's lower profile at recent events with Matt, Simon is in the background in some Emmy pictures but only 1 proper picture courtesy of Armani. Seems odd at this point to seemingly backtrack and I think for many fans Matt's marriage, details of which are never used for publicity, is very appealing. In part because there are still few well known gay couples.

I thought the pairing of him and BD Wong was a bit out of the left field. Typically he's been paired with women because he has easy chemistry with them and it's charming to see the women all charmed by him. I'd have loved to see that! I didn't know BD Wong is gay. That does make me raise by eyebrows.

I think he looked amazing last night. Matt has such an easy masculinity about him imo. Just the way he stands commanding the stage, there is a certain authority & confidence coupled with shyness & humility. I agree with the white beard Virgo. Doesn't quite go with his very young looking fresh face. Gosh, but he is one good looking man! Just stunning. I guess he will never be not extremely beautiful to the point of distraction. Like I've said before there are other beautiful men in Hollywood, way feminine & delicate looking (Jared Leto) who are thriving.

Andrew, Simon may have been in the background because he was working last night. It was a busy night for publicists. At the end of the day he gets to go home with Matt, I guess he's fine not walking the red carpet with his man.The one picture of them was indeed dashing.

Lets' see what's next for Matt as far as his career goes. I'd love to see him do something completely different & crazy in terms of his next role.

About Luke Evans, he was very shrewd to stay in the closet until he had a couple franchises under his belt. Plus, he doesn't have a husband, & likes to hint at times that he might be bisexual. He plays the game well. Matt doesn't play. Matt lives his life happily fulfilled. Something's gotta give right? Zachary Quinto too was smart to stay in the closet until getting hitched to a franchise. Plus he has mentioned that his career has suffered after he came out.

Being a gay actor, versus being a gay married actor with children are two completely different things.

I didn't get to watch the Emmys. I've seen a few pics floating around. Anyone know if there's video somewhere?

It's always a somewhat bittersweet experience to see Matt at the Emmys or any awards ceremony, as he is invariably there as a presenter not a nominee. Another year where he hasn't been given a role to showcase his talent. I had hoped TLT might bring his second run of award nominations, not impossible but by next year who will remember? Maybe a Golden globe nomination is still a slim possibility?

Gorgeous shots just out of Matt for Angeleno magazine. It reminds me of this discussion. His hair still being pushed up/back definitely dampens the rugged attempt (let it fall, Matt!), but it's a great start. Similar to those hot shots in the rocky desert of last year or the year before.

I wish his agent had someone reading fan boards.
