Man of Steel Writer David S. Goyer Discusses Alternate Ending, Why Zod Died

It’s certainly true that Man of Steel’s entire third act, which memorably destroyed a good chunk of Metropolis and ended with Superman snapping Zod’s neck, polarized longtime fans at the time of the film’s release. But according to Man of Steel writer David S. Goyer, this was part of the filmmakers’ goal to take risks and give audiences something they’d never seen before.

 When Man of Steel came up, Goyer explained that he and producer Christopher Nolan sought to bring a “realism” to Superman’s origin. Obviously, this worked wonders on Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. But since Superman is the most powerful being on Earth, applying the same logic wasn’t as easy.

“I absolutely understand a lot of people had problems with it,” said Goyer. “When I have had a hand in adapting these things, you wanna be as respectful to the core material as possible but you also can’t protect against failure. You have to take big swings. With big swings there are big rewards. We took enormous swings with Batman Begins and with The Dark Knight that turned out to be well-received. But we were trying to tell a different kind of Superman story, a Superman story that hadn’t been told before and it required us taking some big swings.”

“We talked about it,” Goyer continued. “We talked about whether or not people would accept it, and the editorial staff at DC had accepted it. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t a mistake, but if you sit there and you say, ‘I don’t wanna take any risk. I’m worried I might offend a portion of the audience,’ I don’t think that’s a particularly healthy way to try to make a film or a television show.” He added that he saw it as Superman’s first and only kill, envisioning that “afterwards he vowed that he could never do it again.”

Regardless, Goyer shared that he wrote an alternate scene where Zod lived to fight another day.

“The idea was that Superman would – there was one of those sort of cryopods on the ship that ends up becoming the Fortress of Solitude that he’s able to put Zod back into and then throw out into space,” Goyer said. “We did talk about it and maybe some people would’ve been happier with that. But it felt like a cop out for the story that we were telling.”

Finally, DSG did something good. I’m glad that SM killed Zod. You can’t let a being like that live. I know it’s fantasy, but that doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to do any kind of thinking. Zod is SM’s equal. If SM let him go, he may come back and SM may not win the rematch. And who will stop Zod then? There were no other known heroes in MOS. Maybe if JL existed.

Who taught SM not to kill? I remember his adoptive dad telling him that he should have let all the kids in the bus die to keep his powers a secret. Heck, he had to let his adoptive dad die to keep his powers a secret, which were not a secret when that happened. So why wouldn’t he kill an alien that has killed and will continue killing? He’s taught that sometimes someone’s demise is necessary.

DSG confuses big swing and risk with nonsense. MOS is full of nonsense. But that’s a list that I’ll share again another day.

Nobody complained when SM killed Doomsday. So he can kill ugly creatures? lol Doomsday kills because he doesn’t know better. Zod kills for fun, hatred, vengeance, selfishness. He deserves to die more than Doomsday. But Doomsday doesn’t look human like Zod. So he can die. lol

This news comes after Deadline broke the story that HENRY CAVILL was in talks with WB to return to the DC UNIVERSE as SUPERMAN. I mentioned last week during my guest appearance on the @lightcastpod that Cavill pitched a ‘SUPERMAN’ arc to the studio which they adored. I now hear that CAVILL’s contract is for in between 5-6 films, so I would imagine that includes his ‘SUPERMAN’ trilogy and cameos in other upcoming DC projects. 

This should be fun! 

I usually don’t post stuff UNLESS I’ve gone through multiple, reputable channels who are all saying the same thing, and if I personally believe it’s plausible/believable. There’s a reason why I don’t run every rumor that pops up on the internet because 95% of them are BS. This right here, isn’t one of them. I trust every person I’ve spoken to about this story. I wouldn’t put my name on something unless I was aware of its legitimacy.

[EXCLUSIVE] Henry Cavill Signs New Superman Film Deal

Sources close to both TCN and DCUNews have confirmed Henry Cavill has signed a new deal to reprise his role as Superman in future DC films.

Sources close to TCN have confirmed, per the information provided by Josh at DCUNews, that Cavill did indeed recently help pitch a new Superman project. This information was recently discussed last week on Friday night Live Steam for LightCast Podcast:

The pitch was widely praised and has led to the official confirmation of his new contract for more appearances as Superman. Ours and DCUNews’ sources have stated that the contract includes 3 films for Cavill’s pitch and options for future cameos in other future DC films, for a total of 5-6 movies.

Thx, but I didn’t miss it. I just didn’t feel like looking for it. It’s not the first time that DG tries to add fuel to the SM rumor fire. That childish strategy got old. She’s a grown arse woman. If she got something to say have the tits to say it or shove it. She didn’t play coy when the news broke that HC got fired. On the contrary, she quickly put together a statement to debunk the rumors. So why can’t she do the same if HC has a new contract? WTH is she waiting for? For the word fairy to plant the right words in her brain? For the day that she’ll achieve something without relying on DJ? I guess we’ll get the news about HC’s new contract in the next life, because she won’t quit leeching off DJ in this lifetime.

DG does fuel the rumors. There’s probably nothing going on, because she likes to brag about everything even when it clearly isn’t wise to do so. Who brags about buying a bankrupt football league that has failed twice before? And it’s not just the XFL (8 teams). The AAF (8 teams) didn’t last a season (2019) and the UFL (4 teams) didn’t finish its fourth season (2012). So Brag after you make the XFL a success.

Three millionaires bought a league for peanuts. Any millionaire who wants to say that they own a whole league or any millionaire woman who wants to say that she’s the first woman to own a whole league could have bought that. I’m shocked that Kris Jenner or Oprah didn’t buy it.

Another shocker is that DG came up with the idea to buy the league, not DJ who used to play football. She saw an opportunity to buy a whole league for peanuts so she can be the first woman to own a whole league. Of course that won’t be in any IG post. IG posts will be about creating opportunity for new players, XFL being more than a business acquisition blah, blah, blah.

Another shocker is that the post comes from the ex-football player. Suddenly he’s all about creating opportunities and yet it wasn’t his idea to buy the XFL. The ex-football player who loves football knew about the bankruptcy and it didn’t occur to him to buy the XFL to create any opportunity for anybody. So the players should thank DG’s eagerness to be the first woman to own a league because that’s real. The altruistic motivation of the ex-football player to create opportunities is fake. He’s just trying to hide the real reason the lady wanted the league.
