Apple Lands Matthew Vaughn’s Star-Studded Spy Film ‘Argylle’ In Massive Package Deal

Apple is near completion on another seismic film package streamer deal. Apple Original Films is closing worldwide rights on Argylle, the next film to be directed by Matthew Vaughn and produced by his MARV banner. First unveiled with cast recently, the package bore an ask of $200 million and Deadline hears that this deal will close right around that mark. It’s a deal for one picture but the hope will be to launch a franchise.

Argylle comes with a killer cast led by Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson. Making her screen-starring debut will be Grammy winner Dua Lipa, who will also provide music for the title track and score.

The parties confirmed the Argylle deal Wednesday but weren’t talking money. “I’m thrilled to team with Apple and bring the most compelling spy thriller I’ve ever read to the only streaming service that can create a franchise of this scale and quality for global audiences to experience,” Vaughn said.

The film, based on the soon-to-be-launched spy novel of the same name from author Ellie Conway, follows the world’s greatest spy as he is caught up in a globe-trotting adventure.

Jason Fuchs penned the script and is producing along with Vaughn’s regular collaborators Adam Bohling and David Reid. Zygi Kamasa, Carlos Peres, Claudia Vaughn and Adam Fishbach will serve as executive producers.

While the financial commitment feels high, it has become the accepted price of doing business on these ready-to-go star packages, particularly one that could become a global spy series like 007. Apple has landed several of these big-ticket film packages including

• the Will Smith-Antoine Fuqua thriller Emancipation (currently in production)
  
• the Martin Scorsese-directedc Killers of the Flower Moon with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro starring in the Eric Roth-scripted adaptation of the David Grann book
  
• the Ridley Scott-directed Napoleon pic Kitbag starring Joaquin Phoenix as the French leader and Jodie Comer playing his wife (shooting is set to begin later this year)

Maybe. I don't know much about films and series soundtrack.

Anyway, this article says that Argylle has just begun filming in the UK. Yay!

Filming will take place in three UK studios: Greenford, Park Royal and Bovingdon. Shots in the US and Greece have already been done. Could be one of the reasons HC was in the US.

The action movie, part of Apple's original film slate, is in production in Europe. Tony Award-nominated Ariana DeBose has checked in to Argylle, the all-star action movie that Matthew Vaughn is directing for Apple.

DeBose joins a call sheet that includes Henry Cavill, Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Bryan Cranston, Catherine O’Hara, John Cena and Samuel L. Jackson. Dua Lipa is also in the picture, making her acting debut, and will provide original music for the title track and score.

Apple TV+ continues streak of big-budget movie deals, lands film starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt

Deadline: The thriller follows two lone-wolf fixers assigned to the same job. The package hit the market last week, and seven to 10 bidders materialized. The combatants included Sony, Lionsgate, Annapurna, MGM, Universal, Warner Bros, Apple, Netflix and Amazon.

Recently, The Information reported that Apple plans to ramp up TV+ content output significantly in 2022, releasing a new original series or film each and every week. This compares to about 35 original releases in 2020, and 40 in 2021.

In addition to the dozens of TV projects in production and development, Apple’s movie slates includes big names like:

“What I love about Henry is he’s a very serious person who doesn’t take himself seriously,” says director Vaughn, who first worked with Cavill on 2007’s Stardust. “He has a military discipline and a soldier’s sense of humor.”

Vaughn agrees [with HC being JB]— so much so that the director cast Cavill as a globe-trotting spy in his upcoming Apple TV+ film Argylle. The movie is Vaughn’s ode to 1980s action thrillers like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon, with Cavill playing an ’80s-style spy (he even has a flattop haircut), except it’s set in the modern world.

“I needed someone who was born to play Bond — which Henry is — and then nick him before Bond did,” says Vaughn, who sees Argylle as a potential franchise. “He plays a larger-than-life action hero with a wink. It’s very different from Kingsman.”
