I'm curious to hear how most of you IMDB refugees plan on using TMDb. As far as I'm concerned, I moved here thinking I'd use it to replace the boards, but that I'd keep using IMDB to keep track of watched movies, personal ratings, lists, and general movie trivia. Will you give up entirely on IMDB, or just use here mainly to replace the boards?

My main reason for using Imdb boards was to find explanations and alternate points of view in some movies. Other reasons were to find similar movies, alost every title had a thread named "similar movies to this" which I found useful. I think I will stop using IMDb ... because of the money making monster it has become. When a database stops being a database, why use it ?

Yes. I used imdb pretty much to rate films as I'd watched them, then look at the associated boards to see other people's views on the film / see if anyone else had noted any issues I might have thought about. Also, to have a look at boards for upcoming releases and see what people are thinking, and any speculation which might have been posted.
I can pretty much do the same thing here now, including the rating films part (I've already imported my ratings history from imdb), so I've no real reason to switch between a half site and this, which offers the full offering...

The same way I did imdb, except for ratings. I think I'll keep my ratings there since moving 1500 or so over here is a huge task.

@JarekReanimated
Is the csv file export / import not working for you?

I got a chuckle at a guy responding to my IMDb post that I'd be switching over here as if I had insulted his Mother. I can understand people defending someone's civil rights, but he was all worked up...over a database. I like it here and I'll more than likely stay - using it in the same manner as it did before.

I'll keep my account active on IMDB, but will most likely not use it. I really only used IMDB for the message boards anyway, and if I wanted to read a movie summary I would check Wikipedia. Going forward, I will primarly use this site for the message boards since it has all the movies and tv shows. I'll add ratings and maybe even some edits as I go.

Oh, I didn't know you could easily do that. I found how to export from IMDB (simply click Export this list at bottom of the rated list page), but I'm less sure how to import it in TMBd. Could you please point to how you did that?

@The Midi-chlorian Count
It is pretty simple.
After Exporting from IMDB go back to your TMDb Account screen. Where you see your User-ID name in the upper right hand corner click your name and you will then see your account settings.
Under the Account settings you will see Import CSV. Select Import CSV. You will be given a new screen with Select Files with an Import Button below that to the right. Select Import . Navigate to your exported file. .......and you're done.

Go to the main page of the website, click your username in the top right, Then down the menu account on the left click "Import CSV"

Hi - I see a couple of others have pointed out the "Import CSV" option for you.
Just to be fair / grateful I guess all of us imdb "refugees" should really be doing this - After all Travis is doing a lot of great work for us to improve our experience coming over here. Transferring over as much data as we can in order to improve the database is a relatively easy way we can all give something back and improve the value of this site π

I plan on using TMDB to discuss/learn about old and new films on the various individual film boards here; pretty much the same thing I did on IMDB. I understand that this Travis fella just re-enabled the individual film boards for this site, and that they are mostly empty. So I guess we've got our work cut out for us:)!!! As for IMDB, I'll probably return there from time to time just to check up on release dates/showtimes for upcoming films, but that's about it. Otherwise I am done with IMDB.

I just exported my ratings and watchlist to CSV few days after announcement of shutdown, imported my lists here (and already updating them here with keeping IMDb outdated) and I am done with IMDb, I am ocassionally visiting IMDb but strictly to promote TMDb, I already banned myself from checking their discussions (to avoid temptation when it won't be available anymore anyway in few days) and I head straight here, though movies I watch these days have empty discussions, so my threads are usually first, when I find movie interesting enough to create thread
as for finding rating of the movie I just put name into google and check in general what's consensus on IMDb, Letterboxd, Rotten tomatoes, CSFD and some other websites in top results before deciding, since I think on TMDb it's missing information about how many people rated the movie, so it's not very reliable rating to trust
might as well add IMDb to my adblocker to make sure I won't visit that piece of shit anymore and don't give their trackers any data anymore, probably gonna do that after Feb 20th when I will shut down my promoting activity indefinitely

Thanks for the tips! I successfully imported my ratings and watch lists.
A few comments though:
But in short, I'm really pleased with this alternative, I really hope the crowd will gather here, I'll do my share of advertisement on IMDB and early posting on the TMDb boards.

I came here as a replacement for the moribund IMDb message boards. Eventually I may rely on it for other things, but currently IMDb has far more useful information on movies, TV shows (including individual episodes), actors, etc. IMDb has in-depth biographies, trivia and quotes for nearly all actors; whereas TMDB has yet to fill in most of those things.
But I also realize that it will take a while for unpaid volunteer mods to achieve what a large, for-profit IMDb has achieved with paid staff and deep pockets. I'll keep checking here and doing comparisons, but right now it's slim pickings here re: deep and broad information.

I'm mainly going to be using the boards on here. I'll also edit and add pages to help improve content, but in order to do that, I'll still have to reference IMDb. So, I'm not going to cut IMDb completely out of my life, but I'll definitely visit it less than TMDb. TMDb is my new movie/TV home!
