Too bad. It looks really nice when a forum's posts can show images and Youtube videos, such as ProBoards type forums. The site doesn't have to host the content, just display it.
This board does seem similar to Maniphest's ReMarkup we use at work for tech docs. As far as I know we can't display images in that either.
I learned a new word here the other day, Gameification. It was suggested as a proposed business model complete with color coding threads for moderation, if sounds were possible that probably would have been suggested as well. >Some will probably want animated gifs for their avatars and signatures. Somewhere I could see opening a page that's blinking and flashing in Technicolor. Iām gonna go on record as this being a bad idea, posting a link to known site like >Imgur has served me well enough.
@travisbell
I personally am all for Gameification as a design construct for this site. It is a design concept that immerses the community into the results and goals for the site. If done correctly it enhances the experience for everyone. The Leaderboards is an example of a part of Gameification based on the points that are assigned for doing particular tasks on the site. IMDB used that aspect quite effectively with badges and such which encouraged and rewarded participation.
Can web images be embedded in posts (i.e. so the image is displayed, rather than as a link). If yes, what is the syntax?
I hope not, I wanna discuss movies, not look at flashing screen full of memes and dick pictures, I think 9gag or 4chan is more suitable for such "movie discussions". If IMDb could get by without this feature for almost 2 decades I can for sure live without it here too, just with link to image, who is interested can open it, who is not does not need to see all memes, SPAM and other waste.
I can think of at one high-class movie forum where valid visual content such as behind-the--scenes photos/videos, videos of movie-related interviews/promo, etc. makes a very nice forum. I also post there. I have absolutely no interest in ever visiting 4chan, 9gag or anyplace like that. I guess I will make more visually pleasing posts at the good forum that supports it.

it's OK for small scale forums where everyone knows everyone, but for large scale forums it would require heavy moderation and waste of human resources to go through tons of images, when it's just simpler to provide URL and it's at your own risk if you open it or no, not mentioning that it would be resource hogging with tons of inline images per page and if only some smal thumbnails would be shown then it's already pretty pointless and on par with providing just link. also some people right to read discussions in train or anywhere on limited mobile data plans, which would be consumed very fast with big inline images, there are tons of reasons why inline images in forums are bad idea and very few reasons why it's good idea
in the other thread about IMDb seem majority of people agree that this is not very good idea to follow
I can understand how images/videos are problematic on large forums without active moderating to remove objectionable content. The same problem exists with links but IMDb's report system worked pretty well for getting objectionable content pulled. I am not a fan of up/down voting because of trolls, including non-fans of particular directors and actors.
And I don't mean this is not a good forum. Just saying a know a good forum where photos/videos work well. Actually I know several - one director-related board and a several large boards based on ProBoards (like Pulse Music, for example).

What high-class movie forum are you referring to, if I may ask.
If I had a vote, I'd vote against an inline-image feature in the near-term, because I assume that the necessary degree of moderation may be impractical for this site at this time.

Nolanfans.com - I think it's a fairly non-nonsense place with a lot of good content. Example page from their Photos/Videos thread:
