The Movie Database Support

In the 80s in the UK, there were 72 films that were included on the official DPP list of "video nasties." A few films on this site had already been tagged with the keyword "video nasty." But I recently went through and added the keyword to the other 60+ films that were on the list.

Well, I just checked the list associated with the keyword and noticed that two films were missing, which means another user deleted them. Luckily, I was able to figure out which two films those were so I could re-tag them...

It's just kind of a nuisance having it so easy for others to delete what I went to the trouble to add. Other data about movies can be locked, so I was just wondering if this could ever be done for keywords?

I wonder if such a keyword wouldn't be best used as a list instead. A user seeing it listed for a movie without knowing the background could easily think it is unrelated. It also makes sense to keep it as it is now though. Just thinking out loud here.

The keyword field for a movie can be locked. However, that means no keywords can be added for that movie so I am always hesitant to do that. In my mind there will always be room for improvements.

Yeah, keywords can only be locked on a total level.

I think it might be better suited in a list too, because if we use video nasties as keywords, then theres lots of lists we need to add as keywords. the 1000 movies to see before you die list/book and such.

If I saw such a keywords, I would think someone added it who thought the video was nasty :|

Good point. Let's wait for one more moderator to weigh in before we decide.

I agree it sounds like it'll be better served as list versus a keyword. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't know what the keyword meant when seeing it and would remove it without bothering to look up the term.

But, I don't see why it couldn't be used as a keyword.... The term basically denotes a specific group/subgenre of films (much like the keywords "slasher," "exploitation film," "banned film," etc); it's not really comparable to one of those extremely broad "1000 movies you must see before you die" lists.

At the same time, I've seen lots of horror movies on here with keywords like "blood," "violence," and "1980s," which in my opinion, are generic and not very useful to have as a keyword.

I guess my point is, is that it can be frustrating when other users delete keywords without even knowing what they mean or how they relate to the film. So that's why I was curious about locking, but I can see why that wouldn't be a good choice if it prevents any new keywords from being added.

Yeah, blood isn't really great keywords either, I think. Way too generic. Violence maybe, if it's like a main theme, not just some violent scenes. 1980s and 19th century for example are good as keywords. We'll soon hopefully release a "contribution bible" and it also has a section about keywords!
