本作是自前作《超人力霸王高斯》完結兩年後推出的電視劇系列。該系列旨在擴大受眾年齡層，採用完全連續劇形式展開劇情，採用大河劇式的系列結構，並引入了許多新的設定，例如多個變身者的出現等。廣告代理商從之前的JR東日本企畫改為電通，節目製作局則從之前的每日放送改為CBC。這是圓谷製作公司首次擔任該系列的製作，同時該系列也首次選定於早晨播出。

De TLT is een geheime internationale anti-monstereenheid die in het geheim is opgericht om Space Beasts te bestrijden, mysterieuze monsters die in 2009 mensen willen aanvallen. Een van de nieuwe rekruten van de TLT, Kazuki Komon, wordt door een van hen aangevallen voordat hij zich meldt voor plicht. Hij wordt echter gered door een zilveren reus die hij 'Ultraman' noemt. Wat niemand weet is dat de zilveren reus een Ultraman is – om precies te zijn, Ultraman Nexus, klaar om tegen de Space Beasts te vechten om de planeet Aarde te redden.

The TLT is a covert international anti-monster unit established secretly to combat Space Beasts, mysterious monsters that are out to attack humans in the year 2009. One of the TLT's new recruits, Kazuki Komon, is attacked by one of them prior to reporting for duty. However, he is saved by a silver giant that he names "Ultraman". What no one knows is that the silver giant is an Ultraman — to be precise, Ultraman Nexus, ready to fight the Space Beasts to save the planet Earth.

「新宿大災害」から5年後、レスキュー隊員･孤門一輝は非公然防衛組織TLTへの配属を突如命じられる。そこへ向かう途中で彼は謎の怪物ペドレオンに遭遇する。諦めかけた孤門を救ったのは、赤い光の中から降臨した銀色の巨人「ウルトラマン」だった。
