Artist Toshio Iwai demonstrates his extraordinary machines, which combine state-of-the-art technology with the moving images of a century ago. The regular Hotlist spot goes to London's Kensal Green cemetery to visit the grave of Victorian scientist Charles Babbage , subject of a campaign by Science Museum curator Doran Swade. And author Kevin Kelly suggests some of the strangest sites to be found on the World Wide Web.

This week, reporter Benjamin Woolley offers viewers the chance to take interactive control, via the World Wide Web, of a robot called Nero which has been placed in the Chamber of Horrors at Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum in London. After the programme, viewers who have Internet access will be able to control Nero and see live video pictures from Madame Tussaud's.

Nero is the forerunner of projects which will dispense with the importance of geography and provide a virtual presence in remote locations which are totally inhospitable to humans.

From the United States, there is a special report on how the homeless and unemployed of San Francisco are getting online. Plus, Canadian guru Michael Strangelove gives advice on how to be a successful advertiser on the Internet. And, in the regular Hotlist spot, a cyber celebrity travels to his favourite places on the World Wide Web.

This week, Benjamin Woolley looks at the options for shopping by computer. In the near future, customers will be able to log on to the Internet and send their designs for goods directly to manufacturers, which will respond to the specifications and return the finished articles. And on the World Wide Web, consumers will be able to access virtual shopping malls, where they can contact product developers directly and take part in auctions.

From the US, the programme reports on the bizarre experience of the associate editor of Time magazine, Joshua Quittner, and his wife and fellow journalist Michelle Slatalla, who wrote a book about hackers and then, within days of its publication, became the victims of hacking themselves.

Plus a look at how anonymous E-mail is helping desperate people to get in touch with the Samaritans; and in the regular Hotlist spot cyber celebrities visit their favourite places on the World Wide Web.

And regular presenter Benjamin Woolley introduces Virtual Reality Modelling Language, which promises to transform the look of the Internet as it brings to it the possibility of fully interactive three-dimensional environments. In the final Hotlist feature, Sadie Plant reflects on how, in the on-line world, you can choose to be whoever you want. And the programme pays tribute to its distinguished predecessor, the BBC TV series about computers, Micro Live.
