I'm a huge Forsyte fan, I loved the original and John Galsworthy's novels were some of the best books I've ever read. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the original Forsyte Saga was made in the sixties in black and white, so by modern standards the production values were pretty weak. Costumes were not the thing in this series, it was all about characterization and social commentary. Galsworthy earned a Nobel prize for these novels. If forced to pick only one favorite, I'd pick Forsyte. I'm so glad you brought up House of Elliott! I'm still watching that one. And now Amazon has a new series about the fashion industry that I'm enjoying as well. The Miss Fisher series is excellent, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I love this type of dialogue on message forums.
You all are so much more knowledgeable than I, and I am enjoying reading your messages. Getting back to DA was there any character that annoyed you? I found Daisy annoying with all her negativity and her speech pattern. Did you notice she dropped the final consonant of some words? What accent was that? I did respect her for wanting education to better herself.
Who thought Mosely would turn out to be so brilliant?

I agree, Daisy did get annoying after a while even quite disrespectful BUT she was a lowly kitchen maid so I guess she was having to fight back sometimes! I guess Lady Mary was annoying until you get used to her, lol, but Michelle Dockery played the role brilliantly I thought.
Annamarie, I don't know about being knowledgeable, I am retired and probably have more spare time than you. So I looked up Sophie McShera (Daisy) and learned she was born in Yorkshire to an Irish family. So nyxeus remembered right; but you can hear the Yorkshire accent in there, too. She was annoying, especially about all that William stuff. I wanted to shake her: she's lucky Mrs. Patmore didn't spank her! I'm from Connecticut, and I've only been to London once, but I do watch a lot of BBC stuff. So it amuses me to hear all those Yorkshire towns like Thirsk and Whitby that I used to see in All Creatures Great and Small. That was another excellent, very popular series.

Perhaps someone could start a new thread where we could list all these great suggestions for period dramas to watch. I'm off to bed in a minute, but, I'll try to remember to start the thread in the morning, if nobody else has.
+JollyDee: an excellent idea! Wikipedia actually lists the highest rated and most popular Masterpiece Classics, I could post that. A lot of those were period dramas. I'm always on the lookout for series I haven't seen! And you never know who will turn up: I saw a very young Tom Hiddleston in "Cranford".
And also, +Annamarie, please don't think I'm a couch potato! I try to make myself useful. I know you didn't imply that at all, but I just reread my posts. Yikes, I come across like a couch potato!
+Claddagh: I'm watching episode 9, season 4 where Rose is presented at court. The dresses are beautiful, of course, but Shirley MacLaine's jewelry is gorgeous! I wish I had the emerald and diamond necklace she wore. But then, where the heck could I ever wear it?
Sheez...I am retired also...and I am a couch potato now! I would really like someone posting a list of period drama's. Last night I watched a little of
WOLF HOUSE. Is this worth watching? Seems interesting.
I did watch The Wives of Henry VIII and found it to be extremely good. My usual brand of viewing has been grittier stuff. Tarantino etc. Ahhh so much to watch...so little time.
Yes the part of Lady Mary was played brilliantly by Michelle Docker. Really captured Mary's different moods.
Annamarie: Wolf Hall? Drop what you're doing and watch immediately! You will NOT see a better actor than Mark Rylance. And I think he's hot! Sadly, he's more of a stage actor and does little television or movies. Because you watched TSWoHVIII, you will probably be interested in seeing Cromwell depicted as a sympathetic character instead of a villain. I'll watch that one again myself, soon. As for Tarantino: Ill never forget the first time I saw Reservoir Dogs (I'm going to dispense with the quotes bookending titles, don't tell my mother) I enjoyed it so much I watched it again immediately! He deserves his own thread. David was kind enough to post some links; gotta check them out. Just guessing, now: do you enjoy John Sandford novels?
Here is the link to Masterpiece, as promised. Please note that "The Best of Masterpiece Theater" was culled prior to Downton Abbey's inception. Also, my all-time favorite, the original Forsyte Saga, isn't on here because it wasn't shown on Masterpiece.
Hi sheezcrazy Just letting you know I took your recommendation & have watched a couple of episodes of Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. Very entertaining so a big thanks for heads up
Someone's started a new thread for all our suggestions & what we've enjoyed so I've jumped in there! We seem to have hijacked this Downton Abbey thread, lol.

Thanks, Claddagh! What's the name of the discussion thread? I'd love to learn and contribute! And isn't Miss Fisher fun?
