God strikes a wager with the Devil: if just one person can convince him that the world is worth saving, he'll spare humanity from destruction, if not, God will scrap all of creation and start over. The Devil is allowed to choose the candidate, and true to form, he picks the least likely person to determine the fate of the world--self-centered, slow-witted Detroit autoworker Bob Alman, an icon of mediocrity. Reluctantly, Bob accepts God's challenge, and has to live a decent life with no hints from God and constant temptation from the Devil. Caught between the forces of divinity and deviance, with the weight of the world on his shoulders, there's nothing left to do but laugh.

God sluit een weddenschap met de Duivel: als slechts één persoon hem ervan kan overtuigen dat de wereld de moeite waard is om gered te worden, zal hij de mensheid van de ondergang behoeden. Zo niet, dan zal God de hele schepping vernietigen en opnieuw beginnen. De Duivel mag de kandidaat kiezen, en trouw aan zijn gewoontes kiest hij de minst waarschijnlijke persoon om het lot van de wereld te bepalen: de egocentrische, trage autowerker uit Detroit, Bob Alman, een icoon van middelmatigheid. Met tegenzin accepteert Bob Gods uitdaging en moet hij een fatsoenlijk leven leiden zonder hints van God en constante verleiding van de Duivel. Gevangen tussen de krachten van goddelijkheid en afwijkend gedrag, met het gewicht van de wereld op zijn schouders, zit er niets anders op dan lachen.
