Item: Shaun das Schaf
Language: de-DE
Type of Problem: Design_issue
Extra Details: Hello there,
got a little problem: I do not understand the idea of episode groups (enough to dare simply starting to create one...). The point is: The order of the episodes is different comparing the english (BBC) broadcast and the german (KiKa) one. This is quite well documented here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaun_das_Schaf#Liste_der_Folgen
So I would like to add this information to TMDB, therefore should understand episode groups, as this is iiuc the proper way to go in such a case. But afaics episode groups are only mentioned not really explained in the help pages. So how to use the forms to express how two ordering schemes relate to each other? Could anyone please explain me how to use this feature or give me a hint to some docs?
And would this work afterwards then lead to the effect, that my (german numbered) episodes will be correctly scraped then...?
Thanks in advance for any help here.

I see there's an episode group for the German order that's empty. From this page, you need to create the different groups for the number of seasons you want. I created the first one for season 1; once a group is created, you go to this page to add the episodes to the specific group. From the list of episodes, you select one, and click 'move selected episodes', that will move it over to the left half, which is the episode group itself. Click on save changes to save it.

Thank you for this immediate answer. I think I see what you mean. But it seems not too comfortable, to say the least... Is this indeed the only way to define alternative orders: one episode after another, by selecting it by mouse several scrollpages below, scrolling back to the top where the move button resides - and then the same for the next episode? And this times 170...?
I would have expected something like: move all episodes of one season into a group to then reorder them there (by mouse dragging or selecting plus up/down-buttons or whatever...)- but this doesn't exist or am I missing something here?

You can select more than one episode at a time, you just have to hold down the CTRL button on your keyboard while selecting them. The list of episodes to choose from will shrink once you save the first episode group -- the idea that an episode would only belong to one subgroup within the entire episode group. So, when working on the second season, you would have less episodes to choose from.
If you're still unsure, I can fill in the episode group later today.

Nono, thank you - I appreciate your help and of course will do what's necessary with the tools you would have to deal with, too.
Of course the list will shrink. But I still have to scroll behind the Specials (Season 0) every time in this case. One thing that would already help really a lot would simply be the ability to filter not only against the episode name but also the episode numer: I simply would filter "1x" and would have a quite easy job. But this is not the place for feature requests I assume... :-)
And yes, I already saw the possibility to select more than one episode - but this only works for the next x episodes which at least have the correct order among each other (e.g. "1, 5, 17, 27, 43" would work, but "7, 2" already not).
Do I understand this correct or is there a hidden comfort zone left which I still don't see...?

The episode group feature is a relatively new feature of TMDb, so there's still room for improvements. If you want to suggest adding different filtering capabilities for this, I suggest you post about in the Website support section.
I just tested it with season 2, you do not need to select the episodes in the correct order among each other; I selected the first few season 2 episodes randomly, not in order, and it seemed to work.

Ok, I see, thank you again.
One thing still left, if you would be so kind:
As this is the main reason why one would do all this: Up to now I can't see any effect in the ordering of the episodes. Well - this is not too much of a surprise, because at least I would have to define for which language this alternative ordering should apply.
Is that possible? Can we set this episode group to be the official "de-DE" one, for example? Because then I think my Kodi would scrape it correct and it would work like a charm. Or is this feature so new, that it exists just for testing (and at least the possibility to provide and store this kind of information) but has no real usable effect yet?

There's a cache on any changes/updates showing up via the API, I believe its like 8 hours or something. You would have to look into how Kodi handles the episode groups from there.

Ok, I'll be patient. Thanks a lot for your help.
And for your direct work on that, too (I assume you did the complete rest of it in the meantime... - I can hardly imagine how you did that in such a short time! :-)).

However, we did not have the opportunity anywhere to define this episode group to be the new one for the german language right? So this is still sth I don't understand and would expect the system to not update to it, right? Up to now there is only the word "german" in its title, not more...

I believe the episode groups are available to any translation of a tv series, as long as there's a German translation of the series, it should work fine. You'll have to look into how the Kodi scraper works with the episode group feature, I am not familiar with how Kodi at all.

Just in case someone struggles over this here and misses the answer about using this feature in Kodi - it's easy and works really well. Basically, you simply create a tvshow.nfo file in the series folder which contains nothing but the link to the above discussed episode group of your choice. I.e. it's like you already guessed: it's free choice which order you'd like to use for your content.
So thanks again for your perfect help on this.
