I suspect they've known about this for awhile, hence all of the talk about "going in another direction." Let's face it, Jennifer leaving is the only thing that would have forced an entirely knew direction. I think it's a good time to end the show. I don't think it will last more than one more season anyway. I suspect Robert Carlyle is also not on board. I see them just writing off all of the main characters as we know them and focusing on a new batch of characters if they do go forward.
They kind of spoiled the season ending with this news.
Frankly, I've been kind of tired of Emma's story for a couple years now.
I agree with you. They should have waited until after the finale aired to release the news because it kinda spoiled the ending. I mean, now that Emma and Hook are married, there is really only two ways to end things: Emma dies or they write both characters off. In any case, the show as we know it now will be dramatically different if there is another season.
I just hope they don't kill Emma. The show's underlying theme has always been about hope and true love. It would be a real bummer to kill off the backbone of the series. This isn't the type of show where they should try to pull off a Buffy Season 5 ending. They will probably pull an Elena from The Vampire Diaries and leave Emma's fate open ended in the hopes Jennifer will return for the series finale (in the event that another season occurs). But I hope they just write off Emma and Hook, Snow and Charming, and Rumple and Belle together so they can live happily ever after.
Hearing about Jennifer Morrison leaving actually made me sadder than I thought. She is the heart of this show, you cannot survive without it. Hook with his own storyline will drive off enough viewers that it may be cancelled mid season 7, which has actually happened before with other shows.
I don't want her to leave. They should end it now, though. Rest it in peace before they screw up anything more. It has been revealed that there are mutilple endings in case the show ends here or if it continues, and the latter likely involves the new casting choices they made.
I wanted this show to end, but now, after realizing it's an actual possibility, I don't want to let it go.
Rebecca Mader is leaving due to a "creative decision,".
Jared Gilmore isn't returning.
Ginny and Josh have already been confirmed.
Emilie De Ravin isn't coming back.
Have already been confirmed to not return?
Yes, they confirmed Rebecca, Jennifer, Ginny and Josh are out. I haven't seen anything about Emilie, but I wouldn't be surprised. I did see Colin post on Twitter that he's returning. I'm now wondering if the mystery actor cast will be Emma and Hook's son in the future (rather than grown-up Henry that was speculated a few months ago).

The writers said these two new characters would not be expanding on the family tree, so I think they must be fairy tale characters or characters already in the show but aged up or down.

If the show ends now - it will be on a high note... itยดll be ok for me.
They have enough unfinished story lines for spin offs :)
And after that musical episode ... nothing can get better ;)

Rumple doesn't deserve a happy ending.
And the musical episode was atrocious. Thank God this is coming to an end.
