Mission: Impossible premiered on CBS, Saturday, September 17, 1966. What else was on television that night, and what shows was it up against, when Prime Time started at 7:30 pm?
CBS: 7:30 – The Jackie Gleason Show; 8:30 – Pistol ‘n’ Petticoats; 9:00 – Mission: Impossible; 10:00 – Gunsmoke.
NBC: 7:30 – Flipper; 8:00 – Please Don’t Eat the Daisies; 8:30 – Get Smart; 9:00 - Saturday Night At The Movies, Donavan’s Reef with John Wayne.
ABC: 7:30 – Shane; 8:30 – The Lawrence Welk Show; 9:30 – Hollywood Palace; 10:30 – Felony Squad.
Why bother to look all this up? It’s a great blast from the past. How many remember these other shows and how active are their message boards today?

Good stuff, klondike! For some reason, I thought Mission: Impossible came on earlier. But now that you mention it, I also remember the Jackie Gleason show, on early, on Saturday nights. And Gunsmoke had always been on Saturday nights late, too. But this was pre-Peter Graves, so no back to back brothers on CBS this season.

Brilliant, Klondike! I was only 5 years old at the time, but I first remember seeing Mission: Impossible on Sunday nights with Peter Graves. It was years later, before I realized there was a season before him. Thanks!

I remember being very surprised to learn that there was a different IMF leader before Jim Phelps. When I bought the season one DVD, I grew to really like it. And though my first crush was Peter Graves, I now also have a crush on the late, great Steven Hill.

BTW, everyone I got a copy of The Immposible Missions Force Dossier! It's in pretty good condition. I haven't gotten to read it, but I'm looking forward to it!

After re-reading this post, I wanted to re-visit it briefly. To call everyone's attention to the TV show Felony Squad, which premiered the same night as Mission: Impossible.
Get this! The three main characters on Felony Squad were veteran Detective Sergeant Sam Stone, played by Howard Duff. Rookie Detective Jim Briggs played by Dennis Cole, and Jim Brigg's father Desk Sergeant DAN BRIGGS (played by Ben Alexander, Joe Friday's original partner on the 1950's Dragnet). There were TWO Dan Briggs on TV that night, on different networks. Go figure!

Bland, sir, surely you jest, it's quite invigorating for a rambler and twitcher traipsing across the countryside savouring the truly magical glory of the autumn sunrise.
