Discuss Naruto

I know in general it's a party foul to watch dubbed versions, but wow... the amount of care, personality & humor they put in the English dub of Naruto is incredible. I especially love the English voice for Naruto that has a certain raspy quality that's perfect for his bratty, rebellious nature. But what's really funny are the subtle differences in translations to English. For example in Japanese, Naruto is quite often called 'baka' (馬鹿) which loosely translates to 'fool'. But the English dub often varies this subtly. Sometimes it's 'idiot', or more playfully it's 'knucklehead', and the surprisingly hilarious one comes in a later episode when an exasperated Sakura calls him 'dumbass'.

In the recent Viz blu-ray release, they include a bunch of behind-the-scenes featurettes with the English voice actors & coaches, and they all note how much discussion there was with how to properly convey the meaning & emotions as well as adding some American quirks. They weren't just reading words off a screen.

Anyway I just thought I'd point out, for any purists who have avoided the English dub, that it's worth giving a try. Especially if you're American you'll recognize a lot of the funny accents that are used. Guy Sensei speaks in a really funny William Shatner-ish parody.* And of course there's the 'fat Elvis' episode which, c'mon, has to be done in English for maximum effect!

(*Yes I know William Shatner is Canadian!)

Had to post this clip as exhibit A. Notice how much fun they had with the American accents. The orange toad in the original Japanese speaks with a Hiroshima dialect which is associated with being a gangster. So in the English/American version they gave him a New York/Jersey 'wiseguy' accent like Joe Pesci. The yellow toad is pure comic relief because he's so laid back in the most stressful situations, so of course they give him a Carolina southern belle accent like Blanche Dubois lol.
