Ember & Umber

So Umber made a deal with Martin to fake his own death in order to save Ember... but Martin banished Ember anyway? Can anyone clarify this for me? I find the whole back story to be the most interesting part.. Why couldn't Ember take care of Martin? He just assumed he was too strong since he 'killed' umber?

Umber made a deal to save himself not Ember. He chose to move to Vancouver instead of getting killed by Martin. He protected himself at the expense of his brother.
