故事发生在在日本冲绳县鸠的海岛上，这里的居民只有49人，唯一的公共设施是一所小学，由于没有生源，再过几天鸠海小学即将废止，平均年龄63.5岁的鸠海岛将来也很可能成为无人岛。为了不让自己的家乡变为荒岛，岛民们急需孩子来这里上学。

岛民仲间勇造（绪形拳饰）来到东京，他想把七岁的外孙带回鸠海上学，但由于女儿的坚决反对只好作罢。不久，勇造在东京街头与一个叫做藤泽琉璃的（成海璃子饰）女孩相遇，十一岁的琉璃父亲已故，被母亲寄养在福利院里。母亲对琉璃不闻不问，令琉璃养成反叛的个性。在征得琉璃母亲的同意后，勇造带着琉璃返回小岛。

岛民们听说有孩子来这里上学，都赶到岸边欢迎琉璃，可没多久大家就领教了琉璃的叛逆性格。因为鸠海小学的早苗老师（小西真奈美饰）让琉璃弄直卷发，琉璃大发脾气后跳上一只小艇企图离开海岛，结果不会驾船的琉璃险些丧命，幸亏一名男子将她救上了岸。这名男子自称叫川岛达也（竹野内丰饰），是东京来的美发师。川岛告诉琉璃自己本想自杀，因为看见她落水奋力营救反倒令自己忘记了自杀的事。川岛为琉璃剪好头发，琉璃以崭新的面貌开始迎接岛上的新生活，同琉璃一样在这里获得新生的还有川岛

Ruri, having been abandoned by her mother to a foster care facility, lives a life of reckless abandonment. When Nakama Yuzo, a kind man but for a trigger-happy temper, runs into Ruri he realizes that perhaps she's the child he's been looking for.

Yuzo lives in Hatomijima, a small insland in Okinawa where the population is 49 and the average age group is 61. There are no children. The island has only one school - a primary school. If a child is not enrolled in the school, it will be closed. As a result, society will abandon the island and in a few years, it will cease to have any inhabitants. To save their island, the locals decide to bring in a foster child. Ruri is their candidate, and with her she brings the hope of the island's survival.

Na fictícia e distante ilha de Hatomi, uma das pequenas ilhas de Okinawa, os habitantes encaram o possível fechamento da única escola existente na ilha, como também o fim de sua comunidade, a única opção para salvar a escola seria encontrar ao menos uma criança para frequenta-la. Incumbidos dessa missão, Nakama Yuzo, parte para Tokyo, onde após frustrantes tentativas em orfanatos, acidentalmente, topa com Fujisawa Ruri, de 11 anos, que foi rejeitada e abandonada pela mãe. Yuzou, consegue levá-la para a longínqua ilha, acompanhados na viagem pelo misterioso Takahara Makoto, que parece querer fugir de Tokyo e de seu passado. A chegada destes a Hatomi, dá início a conflitos e descobertas por parte da menina: amor, amizade, família, raízes, cultura e também por parte de toda a população, que terão toda suas vidas modificadas profundamente pela presença destes dois.
