Are these the best episodes ever to end a series?
The end with everyone playing poker reminded me of another episode S5E18 "Cause and Effect", where they were trapped in a time loop.

I'd say yes, best ending of a TV show ever.
Picard has this "live here and now" mentality, I love that. He mentions it in ST:Generations, too, towards the end.
P:"I should have done this a long time ago."
D:"You were always welcome."
P:"So, five card stud, nothing wild.. and the sky is the limit."
Always gives me a Gänsehaut.

Picard joining them at the poker table for the finale was a really nice touch. We had seen most, if not all, of the crew socializing together in their off duty time over a game of poker throughout the series, so for it to be wrapped up like this (at least the series, not TNG entirely) was a great move.

It is probably the only finale of any series in the last 30 years or so that I haven't heard a good-sized portion of the fans complaining that it was horrible because things didn't happen the way they envisioned them. I don't think I've come across anyone who has said that the TNG finale sucked (there probably are a few, but I've not met any yet)

It was a far better finale then the final moments of Nemesis .At least their final wasn't some part of another series (like they did with ENT which was a fairly good finale until they reveal the Riker /Troi holodeck simulation if they had cut out that part I would have had less of a problem with it and ending with the three captains of Enterprise would have been perfect).

I agree. Another show even imitated the idea: the CHARMED SISTERS, which kept zooming into the past and future to emphasize the continuity of the witch family.

It seems like the vineyard has appeared in the first teaser of the new show "Star Trek: Picard".
Is this a coincidence or will there be a link to what happened there?
Side note:
the scene in the vineyard ("All Good Things...") takes place in 2395.

He is living with his sister in law and has taken up the family tradition of making wine after his brother Rene and his nephew Robert died in that fire.

Not sure about other shows, but "Mad About You" did a similar thing too. With Janeane Garofalo guest-starring as their adult daughter. And it probably didn't start with TNG.

Ah back in the day when Star Trek was at the peak of it's popularity

ST was fresh and new back then with less competition. Nowadays there are so many sci-fi and superhero shows. Plus, all they do are prequels. Showrunners rely too much on old stories and characters (Spock, Picard). Studios don't want to take the risk and try something new, like going into the 25th century with a new ship and crew. I'm wondering if that will ever change.

Well the writers could have saved themselves a lot of trouble by having DISC take place after the 24th century but to draw in more subscribers to CBS All Access and to draw in trek fans they had to bring in al these familiar things/faces even if they don't make sence from a perspective of canon.

Enterprise did the same thing, with Ferengi, and Borg.... it was a bad idea then too.

That's the problem with prequels. They have to shoehorn things in or try to explain things when showing familiar faces, species etc. We all knew the spore drive won't last the moment we were introduced to it. Again, I think it's the studios' (executives') fault, they simply don't want to take the risk and try something new.
ST:PIC is in the future but it's also built literally on top of Picard, a familiar and beloved character. Still no risk taken.

It may be mostly no risk, but a lot still depends on the other characters around him. And if it does turn out to be mostly or even partly about "exploring Picard's increasing dementia" I have a difficult time thinking of anything less interesting.

I just hope we get a good series that makes sense .I hope the showrunners have learned from DISC and why the Orville IMO succeeds far better at bringing over that Star Trek feel.(maybe they should sack Alex Kurtzman)
