Discuss Star Trek: The Next Generation

He seems to be dangerously obsessed with being first officer of the Enterprise and being with Picard and terrified of moving away from his comfort zone and has turned down several captaincies because he just loves being on the Enterprise, we later learn his choosing to stay is having a damaging effect on up and coming candidates in Starfleet like in The Best Of Both Worlds who want to advance in their careers are held up by a man who will not move no matter how many ships he's offered, seems his only logic for staying because his friends are there, he's fond of the ship, he's fond of the captain and is just hanging around, some reason he's happy there and doesn't want to move. Think with all his constant passing up captaincies should have resulted in Starfleet comforting him and saying accept captaincy or sent you to cadet training school to train cadets or something.

IN WESTWORLD it's also explained how the HUMAN MIND is also composed of ONE'S and ZERO's (the same way as one plays a player piano by using the CODE that gets programed into it).

See this is another example of where you take something that someone MADE UP and WROTE for a FICTIONAL TV SHOW and act like it's real.

Just because someone wrote in Westworld that "the HUMAN MIND is also composed of ONE'S and ZERO's (the same way as one plays a player piano by using the CODE that gets programed into it)" doesn't make it true in the real world. And really that makes it claptrap BS nonsense for the show, too. They might as well say that, "hey, if you cut off a cockroach's head the body can survive for days, so let's do that with people too! It'll be cool! (And Invidia will believe it can really happen!)"

Whenever one SUSPENDS ONE'S DISBELIEF, that doesn't mean you BELIEVE what happens in a work of FICTION.

It just means one is willing to do so as a way to ENJOY the STORY!!!

And in the STORY what they do is use RECORDING DEVICES inside of the COWBOY HATS the GUEST wear in the PARK which RECORD what's in the MINDS of people.

And eventually they're able to RECOGNIZE PATTERNS of BEHAVIOR which are then PLACED into CODES (the same way as the NOTES for the PLAYER PIANO are also placed into CODES so the KEYS will PRESS as a way to hear the MUSIC).

So the IMPLICATION is we HUMANS behave in ways that are similar that can also be RECORDED in CODES that represent WHO we are due to the way our behavior patterns are also predictable to a certain extent.

That's all just made up for the show, and doesn't represent reality. And it certainly doesn't prove that "the HUMAN MIND is also composed of ONE'S and ZERO's (the same way as one plays a player piano by using the CODE that gets programed into it)".

But one can't use technology science from another SF show to explain the tech and science in a Star Trek show especially since Star Trek has it's own established technology and it's limitations.

No

Cylons are part machine part humanoid ,Replicants are fully biological they were chemically and genetically engineered(Replicants is actually a fancy word for enhanced disposable humanso or bio-android)

Why overly complicate things when a single word is sufficient πŸ˜‰

Exactly. We're not ALL Invidia. grinning

Data would be a better choice for first officer since he's the Spock of the show.

No he couldn't because he was an android that's why Picard is making the claim that TNG Federation was android-phobic 😁😁😁

@Invidia said:

Yes The CENTURIANS were one form, but the HUMANOIDS were another form (just like DATA is one form and DAHJ and SOJI are another MUCH MORE ADVANCED FORM).

And WESTWORLD also has a more PRIMITIVE ROBOTIC FORM and a MUCH MORE ADVANCED FORM of their creation that is much more HUMAN in appearance.

And the HUMANOID CYLONS were also so ADVANCED that NO ONE could tell the difference between them and a HUMAN (including DOC COTTLE).

As for a REPLICANT being defined as a DISPOSABLE BEING, that's also a pretty CREEPY way to describe them !!! >

Not creepy but factual Replicants were there to do jobs too dangerous for ordinary Humans also they had a limited lifespan ergo they were diposable,Replicant sounds fancier but it is what it is.

What if we were to also discover that we ourselves were created by still another more ADVANCED RACE of BEINGS???

Would that also make us DISPOSABLE as well???

astonished>

Gosh haven't you seen Prometheus our creators made us because they could just like Weyland was able to make David.

Probably or maybe they were just having a bit fun after a long night boozing. 😁😁 But maybe I am the wrong person to ask since I don't have much of a high opinion of Mankind in general. 😁

Oh God no please not some engineer nonsense also Synths being resposible would be preposterous because it is us biological beings that supress the Synths why would you create something that inevitably would become a threat to ones own existence. And besides that Humans weren't created by Synths in TNG episode The Chase we find out we were the product of a humanoid race that spread their genetic material across the galaxy bilions of years ago so no the Synths aren't the crsators of Humans maybe thaqt Chariots Of the gods nonsense was popular back in the 70's but face it we are a product of evolution not of some God or Alien race. If Chabon and Kurtzman want to go that way they should get flogged for blatently ignoring Star Trek canon, but hey we could expect this since Picard was full of religipos and magic nonsense because they don't know jack of Trek science let alone real science. Commander Oh was right they should have destroyed the synths they are a permanent threat to all organic beings in the Milky Way and don't come to me about moral or ethical issues since Starfleet didn't have problems to destroy the Borg who are in many respects closer to organic beings than the Synths(and consists largely of assimilated other organic beings) so when one has to choose between the survival of Synthetic beings (who are often created by organic beings)and all organic life the choice should be very simple.

You don't see where you screwed up, do you?

Even if that were "true" it wouldn't be the synths that "Created" life on Earth. They would have just been the robot caretakers of biological "seeds" that were actually created/sent out by the other biological beings.

Well, to borrow a line from Nex…

No.

The Chase didn't mention anything about robots so that theory goes out of the window also some remains of the robots would have survived that by the 24th century we would have found out about their existence.

No Data was unique in many respects and Data didn't strive to build an A.I. that would eventually kill all organic life .Data aspired to be human and explore living to it's fullest extent and even have emotions. The Synths in Picard are nothing like Data they are simplified versions of Data of one could ask whether they are sentient and that was not their function to begin with they were basically just advanced tools who could easily be reprogrammed by the Romulans to attack Mars.As for what Dahj and Soji are is not quite clear but the fact they can get activated seems to imply they are not A.I. either. So Data Dahj and Soji don't dream of electric sheep.

No the circumstances when we meet Hugh and 7 0f 9 were different from normal circumstances.Hugh was marooned disconnected from the collective. 7 0f 9 was put on board of Voyager as a contact for The Borg who was disconnected from the collective by Janeway,But under normal circumstances, i.e. when Borg drones connected to the collective come out en masse and assimilate anything the collective deams worthy of assimilating,Starfleet wouldn't hesitate to destroy them because then they impose a threat.

Well Icheb already had our sympathy so the whole ripping eye out seems rather to be there for shock value rather than create sympathy for the character and one could also state it as a comment that even in times of hardship some will prey on the weak and exploit them besides the whole Borg part black market plot didn't went anywhere rather than a plot device to bring us from planet A to B and a means to bring in 7 0f 9 .Seems like just as STD STP throws up a lot of (by themselves interesting )ideas and concepts that usually get nowhere or without further exploration/explanation or they come up with some cheap lazy solution when by the end of the season they find out that they left open several plot threads.

I gave The Borg as an example that even despite the Borg consisted of aliens assimilated against their will (sometimes they were former crewmen or even friends or family )when push came to shove Sarfleet didn't hesitate to destroy them when they were a lethal threat (Riker didn't hesitate to blow up the cube in Best Of Both Worlds,Picard didn't hestite in First Contact even thoough he knew it would kill a lot of his former crew(heck he even killed a guy while he was being assimilated because you would be doing them a favour)So why would Starfleet hesitate to destroy the Synths when to represent a threat to all organic life?Picard might have prevented Soji's elder sister from summoning Robo-Cuthulu but what happens if Soongs (fake) son says something bad or looks at her in a manner she doesn't like or Soong's son decides to trash his laptop out of fustration than it's back to the beacon to call Robo-Cuthulu.

Well considering how Picard reacts in First Contact he probably would have ordered Riker that if he wasn't able to retrieve him that Riker should have destroyed the Borg cube.

Well the Synths seem to function as a collective.
