I feel like the majority of people who have seen and really like The Wire caught it after it's initial run. I am among that cohort. I remember the first six episodes being a slog, and not until later, after being with the characters for a while did the show really grab me. But I had the luxury of binging the show, forcing myself to keep with it because of its reputation and the recommendation of respected friends. And sure enough I did become enthralled in the show's intricacies, setting, character, and themes. But now that I'm starting The Deuce, I find myself in that first episode slog again. And I can't push myself to watch the next one, because there isn't a next one. I'll have to wait a whole week. Hitting that flow seems like it will be harder if not impossible now.

Is it similar to The Wire then? It sounds good.

If you are a straight gentleman, the nudity should keep you entertained during any slow patches.

I'm finding it a bit of a slog also; was totally uninterested in James Franco's dealings with the mobster. Still sticking with it a bit longer . . .

The mobster dealings may have lost you but the Viking spunk pulled you back in.

I didn't really like the pilot but after watching 4 episodes I am really into it. It's not the best show I have seen by any means but I can honestly say I have never been bored watching it. I'll most likely continue watching. I really enjoyed the wire but I binged watched all of the seasons in late 2012-2013. They're better when you can watch them back to back. I watched all 5 seasons in 6 months, haha.
