Discuss 13 Reasons Why

I have a lot to say about Tylers story arc so I think it best if I break it down like this.

  1. I know people are throwing fits about Tyler's rape scene, with most saying the show should be cancelled for it. But my opinion is that it was necessary. Tyler was obviously set up to at least attempt a school shooting, and while im no psychologist, Im pretty sure that kind of action requires a lot of blind anger and emotional instability (temporary or not).

With them having him go to that brainwa......Sorry got ahead of myself.... behavioral therapy group (whatever), that edge seemed to be taken off him. Also, on most teen drama shows, arcs with a school shooting tend to get started by the shooter being assaulted by another classmate, usually a jock. In all honesty, I expected Monty to just beat Tyler up to trigger him, and the mop was a BIG surprise. I really cant see why everyone is so shocked that they showed it in an graphic way. They didnt sugarcoat Jessica's rape, they didnt sugarcoat Hannah's, and they made DARN sure they didnt sugarcoat her suicide. So why did people expect them to treat a male on male rape scene any differently.

  1. Next to Hannah, Tyler's overall story has served to show the overall elitism and hypocrisy that Liberty (and possibly other RL high schools) practice, in regards to bullying at least. The thing is, they arent acting any different than most schools Ive seen portrayed on television or reported on the news.

To clarify: The school gets a report that a student is being bullied. Instead of confronting the bully or just kicking them out, they go after the victim. Whether its because they spoke up, lashed out as a result, or just decided to defend themselves, they end up being the ones that get punished. They are the ones that get detention, suspension, expulsion, or forced to go to some program that in reality just makes them feel more victimized

Thats why I rolled my eyes every time they brought up the Alt Class or the program they threw Tyler in. While it may have been a good/necessary idea on paper, the fact that they never even TRIED to discuss a "no bullying" policy, means all of it was obviously just their half-assed attempt to fix their PR and keep all possible victims quiet, which Im pretty sure Tyler and Cyrus were aware of. While some consider Tyler's new behavior as a develpment, it just came across to me as him being brainwashed to think that his outrage against the school was unjustified, that his torment at the hands of Montgonery and the bulldogs was his fault, and that he's responsible for their nonsense.

Also, Im guessing when that new Guidance Counselor told Tyler they were going to "keep and eye on him" she really meant "we'll be looking out for you to make noise. any harassment against you is your own problem." Had they dealt with the jocks properly and sent Tyler to a program to study some self defense instead of passive submission, the attack might not have happened the way it did.

  1. Clay confronting Tyler was impressive. I know in real life, he'd be dead and we'd be screaming how idiotic it was, but they managed to make it look realistic. Clay was juggling his words and his emotions in that moment to help a kid he himself admits has had it worse. It was especially nice how he sort of apologized for sending the nude pic of him. It not only spared Tyler from making a terrible mistake, it showed that Clay acknowledged the other people that have suffered as a result of Hannah's actions.

This said, I am of two minds about how it went down. Part of me wouldnt have minded (not wanted, not begged for) if Tyle had ended up shooting Bryce or Monty. However, the other part of knows that if they had done that, it would have LEGITIMATELY glorified school shootings, which would have disappointed the fans probably. Either way, I am pretty sure if they give a season 3, the investigation will end up putting them both in hot water since anyone can tell the police Tyler was bullied by them.
