Only one episode is released a week. They increased the episode order to 15 and are only airing 8 episodes this year. The remaining 7 episodes are slated to be released sometime in January.
That release schedule/season splitting sounds like A&E or AMC's practices. One small problem with this approach is: Life Goes On. Former fans forget what happened last year and don't return for "season 2." (I remember tyring to remember what happened last season when the final season of SF's "12 Monkeys" arrived in a "marathon burnoff" week.) I've signed on to CBS Access to follow "Star Trek: Discovery," and not the rest of "CBS on demand." (Besides, most of the series on tap that I'm interested in were cancelled, which I don't care to relive.)
I signed up to watch Discovery, which I greatly enjoy. Since so many people have signed up to tell everyone how terrible this program is (how it is not like the old days, canon, facial makeup, etc.) I'm on record now also!
After looking through the CBS programs offered I have not seen anything else of interest at this time; the cost is less than stopping for a fast-food break once a week, and I also enjoy watching After Trek. I love the look of the new show and have enjoyed the story so far.
I do not see Michael Burnham as a mutineer as much as I do a soldier having a stunning PTSD flashback to when her parents were slaughtered by the Klingons. Her anxiety level was over the top in wanting to protect her mentor/surrogate mom from death. Once Captain Georgiou is killed, she no longer cared about anything and would have led the walk to the gallows herself, if she had been offered the opportunity. She is not a born-again mutineer; she is the former 'best First Officer in the Federation'. Lorca, being no fool, nor suffering them on his ship, took that choice and 'official' punishment from her with his rescue because he wants to use her skills as #1 in a different capacity. Tonight's Episode Six proves in word and deed how much Lorca values her.
This is very intriguing television and script writing that I have to think about because it is different and rather demanding in its difference. Others can whine all they want about the old days and the old ways to their hearts' content. I wish them well. At 73 with so many memories of times like the late 40s-50s-60s, the McCarthy trials where Bobby Kennedy became a star, the Cuban crisis with our blocking Russian ships in our waters, JFK being killed, friends from my college leaving after graduation to be peacekeepers in a small country we had never heard of before; plus, working for a World Trade Center when WTCNY was bombed in 1993 . . . .
Well, I know the old days do not exist, neither would a decorated WWII Veteran like Gene Roddenberry - if he were alive - write about what was back there and then again. He was always current and relevant. Life is (always) a bit scary and it is real for those who want to be breathing and living in the now. Celebrate being able to wake up and make choices now.
If people want the old ways, watch the reruns and be happy. Cheers!
