I get more and more disappointed with each episode. Almost all of the characters are unlikable. The Klingons still look dumb and sound dumb. My god did they screw up the Klingons. And we know the spore drive won't last so it's a pointless plot point.
What I wish they had done is set the show a few months before Romulus gets blown up. The Alpha Quadrant is still recovering from the Dominion War and the growing sentiment is that it was the Federation's fault so some of the member worlds start withdrawing from the Federation in protest.
Star Fleet launches a new ship that incorporates some of the tech brought back by Voyager and Dominion tech they won in the war, but the ship is constantly malfunctioning so it's kind of a mess. Even so this ship is tasked with trying to make peace with the member worlds who are thinking about leaving the Federation.
Then in a wikileaks style info dump, top secret documents are released that Star Fleet tried to genocide the Founders hurting their credibility. And although some people are okay with that, Sisko's deleted log confessing how he tricked the Romuluans into the war was salvaged somehow and is also released. Then very shortly after, Romulus blows up. This all looks REALLY BAD for the Federation and 50+ member worlds leave. And most important of all, the Vulcans leave to join their Romulan brothers and help them rebuild.
I also think it would have been cool to have a Jem'Hedar in Star Fleet as chief of security on the new ship and a Romulan to help tie into the Romulan story.
I also would like to see a new race of villains who are responsible for the member worlds leaving the Federation and getting them to join a new anti-Federation alliance that's driven by the growing hatred for the Federation. And best off all the Klingons will look like Klingons.

Interesting plot ideas. I think there is a lot of ground to cover in the aftermath of the war with the Dominion. The political fallout is definitely worth exploring.
I agree, why are they looking backwards when coming up with new Trek? Shouldn't it be about the future?

Sounds great, I'm so sick of prequels.
My idea for a cool show would be about an archaeologist and his motley crew, the ship wouldn’t be that big but the small crew would include a Cardassian, Klingon and a Romulan, the Captain/Lead would be a human Han Solo type figure seeking ancient artefacts from lost civilizations and also familiar planets like Vulcan.
The focus wouldn’t be on the federation but one of the crew would be of the federation in an advisory role.
The purpose of the show would be about exploration, action/adventure and adding additional lore to Star Trek’s many aliens.

I dunno, just for one thing, is there any evidence or other reason to believe that there are any ancient Vulcan artifacts that weren't on Vulcan? They didn't seem to have star travel in their distant past.

Yes, that's cool too. I'd watch that. Would be a good way to explore the trek universe but without being tied down by the Prime Directive.
I just really want a show set after Voyager. Is that so much to ask? I just want to know what what the Trek-verse looks like after the Dominion War. I liked half of Enterprise so it's not like I'm totally against a prequel, but they did that already and it was cancelled. I know CBS wants our money yet they don't want to give us a product we'd willingly pay for.

If a new StarTrek series was set twenty years or so after Voyager think of all the guest stars we could have in it from previous shows. Wasted opportunity.

Good Morning!
I am enjoying Star Trek: Discovery enormously. Since so many people have signed up to tell everyone how terrible this program is (how it is not like the old days, canon, facial makeup, etc.) I'm on record to tell anyone interested that I love it! My fan history began with reruns in summer 1975 and by January 1976 I had become involved with a Star Trek fan organization that became listed as the largest in the world (when numbers were measured). We created our own annual 4-day/24 hour conventions with actors from TOS, writers, authors, artists, cosplay, etc.; we managed and staffed everything. I was captain of one of two dozen outposts. We organized a huge letter campaign to have the first shuttle named Enterprise; we bombarded Paramount to bring back Star Trek back by either films or TV. My outpost members met weekly at my home and it was important to all of us. Though many were professionals within our community, people were amused and I was never ridiculed in my executive situation because the passion for what the show represented was so important to me.
A major difference for how I feel about this new incarnation and how many are complaining about how it is not the same as _____. _____. or _____ is that was then and this is now. Having heard "The Great Bird of the Universe" in person, I know he would tell everyone that the old days do not exist. Gene Roddenberry - if he were alive - would not rewrite about what was back there again and again. He was always current and relevant. , He was a decorated WWII pilot veteran who knew like was about living in the now and writing about current events as he or his hired writers did every week on TOS.
I love the look of the new show and have enjoyed the story so far. As I included on a different topic, I do not see Michael Burnham as a mutineer as much as I do a soldier having a stunning PTSD flashback to when her parents were slaughtered by the Klingons. Her anxiety level was over the top in wanting to protect her mentor/surrogate mom from death. Once Captain Georgiou is killed, she no longer cared about anything and would have led the walk to the gallows herself, if she had been offered the opportunity. She is not a born-again mutineer; she is the former 'best First Officer in the Federation'. Lorca, being no fool, nor suffering them on his ship, took that choice and 'official' punishment from her with his rescue because he wants to use her skills as #1 in a different capacity. Tonight's Episode Six proves in word and deed how much Lorca values her. The relationship with Sarek (pronounced in TOS as SAR'rK) is intriguing and Spock loses nothing with this new 'sibling'. I remember being shocked at that bizarre brother who was foisted on is in Shatner's strange movie. Michael is a better match in context for Amanda's caretaking than Lawrence Luckinbill's character.
If people want the old ways, please watch the reruns, leave us in peace, and be happy. Find the best for yourselves and chose positive energy over the negativity of what you cannot change. Cheers!

Well I'm glad some fans are enjoying the show. I envy you in ways. However, as someone who has dedicated a lot of time to this franchise, and although there are certainly aspects of the show I like, I don't see how rolling over and (in my and a lot of other people's opinions) letting the show flounder and die helps the franchise.
Keep in mind I don't look back at all the other shows the rose tinted glasses. The first season of TNG was pretty bad, and much of the second season too. DS9, my favorite of the shows, had its clunkers in the first season. I only like 3 out of Voyager's 7 seasons (4, 5 and 7). The first two seasons of Enterprise are VERY horrible, but seasons 3 and 4 kind of make up for it.
Again, super happy some people like STD as is, but I've already witnesses a prequel Trek show start off with everyone hating it only to start getting good in the 3rd season but by that time having lost most of its viewers and being canceled. I WANT a Trek show to succeed and be big hit and last several seasons, but the people making STD are CLEARLY taking us fans for granted (CBS All Access!) while intentionally making the characters unlikable and largely ignoring Trek canon.
My hope is that the showrunners will listen to all the things fans don't like about the show and course-correct before they lose too many viewers and cancel the show.

Hi, CS.
I want to challenge you on a couple things: Well I'm glad some fans are enjoying the show. I envy you in ways. However, as someone who has dedicated a lot of time to this franchise . . . . When someone uses However as a transition to their actual thought to is their palm in the person's face with BUT written on it. Don't you think it is simply more honest, to begin with, I've already witnessed a prequel Trek show start off with everyone hating it only to start getting good in the 3rd season but by that time having lost most of its viewers and being canceled. I WANT a Trek show to succeed and be big hit and last several seasons, but the people making STD are CLEARLY taking us fans for granted (CBS All Access!) while intentionally making the characters unlikable and largely ignoring Trek canon.
Your bottom line is that Star Trek: Discovery has failed you and everyone else who thinks and feels as you do. Your comment that my sheer enjoyment and pleasure in this very creative, fresh, and extremely relevant presentation of a program I spent years of my life actively supporting prior to retiring to merely enthusiastic fan is that I am rolling over and (in my and a lot of other people's opinions) letting the show flounder and die helps the franchise.
To repeat myself, you want the old ways, please watch the reruns, leave us in peace, and be happy. Find the best for yourselves and chose positive energy over the negativity of what you cannot change. Cheers!
Do not bother addressing any further comments to me as our conversation goes nowhere and accomplishes nothing. Have a great week and enjoy hating ST Discovery with your friends.

STD has been a letdown so far, but that's not to say some fans can't enjoy it. To me the show is Trek in name only. They changed everything that I have come to know and love as Trek and expect fans to watch whatever drivel they churn out week after week. If the name Trek wasn't attached to the title, I would have given up on this show by the 3rd episode, but I'll watch a few more in the hopes the show improves. Seriously, how much worse can it get?

I can certainly understand fans of the "reboot" movies enjoying this series. Poor dears. They know not what they do.

And what happened with that double-existence thing they showed at the end of the previous episode? Just down the memory hole? How can they really justify even going one episode without even mentioning that?

I respect your opinion and I repeat, if you enjoy this show then good on you, there's no shame in that. I'm just saying that, as a fan of the series for over two decades at this point, this version of the show is clearly inferior to previous versions, needlessly in my opinion.
And I think you read me wrong if you think I just want "the old way" the other shows were. This is why I pointed out how nearly every past Trek show has a terrible first season. I just feel that in this day and age a show like this that costs this much to make and has to please so many fans and live up to the glory of past shows can't afford to have a terrible first season, unlikeable characters, and a badly written plot.
The CGI is great and the actors aren't terrible, but I just feel that they shot themselves in the foot by setting the show 10 years before TOS and making the main character Spock's surprise sister. You claim the show is "creative, fresh and relevant" when it just feels like they are piggybacking on the Kirk/Spock era connection and creating tons of continuity errors and making bad changes to the Klingons (I mean seriously, how can you defend these ugly marble mouth Klingons?).
Why not set the show on the edge of Federation space far away from Kirk/Spock and with new characters who have no connection to TOS characters? Why not set the show between Undiscovered Country and TNG since we haven't seen much of that era on screen? Or why not just give what the majority of fans want and set it after Voyager/Nemesis or even 100 years after that era and start totally fresh?
Why didn't CBS do this? "It's the money, Lebowski!" They wanted that TOS connection as a selling point no matter how little sense it makes. I don't want the show to fail, I just want it to be better than it is because I know it can be.
Wait, so because we disagree we can't discuss it? Well what's the fun in that? If you truly stand by your convictions than you should be willing to stand up and fight for them, no?

Enterprise, the boring Abram movies, and now ST:D that we have to pay to see. Not sure what the obsession is at CBS to constantly rehash the past.
Voyager brought back enough goodies from the Delta Quadrant to make a new series very interesting. I guess the next series will fill in the entire 80yr gap between the Kirk and Picard span? They're slowly destroying this franchise. .
Let's move onward, idiots at CBS!

I would have preferred to see more of Firefly, but nobody at the networks asked me.
