It took a while before I recognized that Sir Piers Giffard was portrayed by James Wilby since I hadn't seen him in a while. It wasn't until the scene in which he lit into Sir Robert Peel that it dawned on me probably because, once again, he was playing a pompous, constipated prig! I always enjoy his performances but honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing him in a role that's different -- e.g., a person who's likeable. If anyone can point out any, let me know because I've missed them!

I think that even when he was young that Wilby tended to get cast in those general type roles. I guess it's aristocratic arrogance/disdain or whatever.

I remember seeing him play a gay man along with Hugh Grant and his character was not of the type you describe. He was sad and visited doctors for cures for being gay.
