I don't get why it appeared to take 3 button-presses to open the bedroom door at home. Shouldn't there just be a big "OPEN" button? If not some kind of handle or knob? Or heck, have it open automatically when he got close.
And did anyone else notice the small model of Orville and Wilbur Wright's "The Flyer" on Captain Mercer's desk?

The credits had some familiar names; did some of the actual STAR TREK staff come on board? And I think the doctor is the same actress who played Sisco's wife on late episodes of DEEP SPACE 9.

Interesting character touch: Kitan highly resents being called a "kid", but lets the helmsman's far more vulgar insult slide because she knows the helmsman is anguished over his old friend's disappearance.

Maybe it's a PIN console, though I don't know why he'd need one at home.

Well not exactly odd (I think it was meant to seem so to the viewer?).
Isaac sounds like Data.
Bortus sounds like Worf.

I caught an interview with Seth McFarlane. The Orville is named after Orville Wright (sp) thus the model of the Wright Flyer.

Yes of course. My point was that while other people have commented on things like the dog-licking being kinda thrown right in our faces - via character dialog - the Flyer model thing is just.... there.
