I would also prefer it not turn into a 'comedy' show. If it does you risk turning it into a 'spoof' with outlandish creatures and ridiculous story lines.
I would laugh my ass off if this show gains a bigger fanbase then Star Trek Discovery. I'm waiting to see critics try to compare the two shows. I love the fact that they are airing nearly at the same time. But as others have commented, after watching the first 3 episodes. I feel as if i'm actually watching a Star Trek spin off of some sort. I like the pacing and the general feel of the show. I was afraid the show would be too wacky for my taste, but i'm glad it wasn't the case.
Well, the first two eps of Orville aired on Sundays, which is when the first Discovery ep is showing this coming Sunday, but Orville has already moved to Thursdays where it's going to stay, and following the first Discovery ep airing on Sunday it's going to be - they say - only available on the CBS online service, and I don't know if they've said what day new episodes will be available.
The humor in episode 3 was a little weird. They were dead serious at moments and others moments it felt like pure comedy. Ultimately I still think the show is coming together. It'll take a minute for them to find their groove.
I am pleasantly surprised by the balance they have struck between Comedy, Drama and action.
IMO comedy is most effective when played off drama and/or action. Shows that are played for pure comedy can easily become outlandish, silly and tiresome very quickly.
Personally, I'm disappointed so far. If I wanted to watch a Star Trek series, that's what I would look for. To be fair, I'm not expecting Family Guy type of humour, as that would be just more of the same as well. I look to something like "A Million Ways to Die in the West" as my reference, with the comedy dialled down only slightly and then I think the series would be worthwhile.
I'm giving it one more episode but if it still proves to be all heart and few laughs, then I'm out. I was never a Trekkie and with this series seemingly being geared towards that audience, it's just not for me.

They could make it a 'dramedy'. Play it straight but with occasional jokes.

It feels very much like Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The show has the right balance between action/drama/comedy. It is campy fun like Hercules and Xena were back in the 90's.

Finding it a bit odd. For a show that was sold as a spoof, Ep 3 could have been a TNG episode if it wasn't for the occasional use of the "d" work.

But how could Ed be captain without studying at least as much interstellar/interspecies law as his XO had?
