1870 heiratet die einzige Tochter des reichen Industriellen Baron Eugene-Victor Kempf in Alsheim den Grafen Charles de la Tour, Hauptmann bei den Chasseurs d’Afrique. Nach der Hochzeit bricht der Krieg aus und Frankreich unterliegt. Das Elsaß kommt zu Deutschland. Hauptmann de la Tour fällt im Krieg und Mathilde trauert um ihren Mann und um ihr Land. Sie bekommt einen Sohn, Louis. 1894 studiert er in Straßburg Jura und verliebt sich in Friederike. |
