This is the second spin-off of the popular TV show "black-ish (2014-)".
The first was "grown-ish (2018-)", where we follow the eldest daughter Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi).
Zoe is a young adult now and she's left home for college.
In "mixed-ish (2019-)" it's the turn of wife and mother Dr. Rainbow "Bow" Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) to have her own (prequel) spin-off, where we learn more about her background, growing up in a mixed race family in the 1980s.
In this show she is the narrator. Her younger self is played by Arica Himmel.
Anyone who has watched "black-ish (2014-)" and wondered what all the hoo-ha was about whenever people tell her that she doesn't understand the 'struggle' because she isn't black enough, will now get a better understanding of Bow's own emotional conflicts on this issue.
Of course, it's a sitcom, so with the serious message(s), there's also a lighter side and hopefully a lot of laughs.
Enjoy!
Dre: "Keep it real".
Bow: "That's what I said."
Dre: "Oh, okay. All, all this coming from, uh, a biracial or mixed or omni-colored-complexion, whatever it is they're calling it today, woman, who technically isn't even really black?!"
Bow: "Okay, well, if I'm not really black, then could somebody please tell my hair and my ass?"

wonder, I was wondering, when watching the series premiere of this new show, and as someone who's never (other than strictly minor bits and pieces here and there throughout recent years) watched the originating series, if Bow's siblings and parents also have appeared (different actors/actresses, of course), or the siblings ever been at least mentioned by name, in the originating series, or if this is the first we're seeing and hearing about them?

Yes, they've appeared on "black-ish (2014-)".
Bow's parents, Paul Johnson (Beau Bridges) and Alicia Johnson (Anna Deavere Smith), make their first appeareance in "Parental Guidance (S1E16)".
Her brother, Johan (Daveed Diggs) returns from France and stays with Dre and Bow in "God (S3E02)" and her sister Santamonica (Rashida Jones) visits in "Sister, Sister (S3E21)".
